Purpose Statement

The job of Head Coach is to design and implement the athletic program for the assigned sport in accordance with applicable rules and regulations; supervise other coaching personnel; supervise students during all aspects of the program; use sound instructional techniques; serve as a positive role model; and act as a liaison between the school, district, community and other organizations.

Essential Functions

Assess student athletes to provide feedback and determine team placement.

Attend meetings, workshops, and conferences to receive and convey information related to the role.

Conduct support activities (e.g., parent orientations, recognition events, banquets) to provide information and recognize participants’ accomplishments.

Develop team and individual practice regimes (strength, speed, agility, nutrition, injury prevention) to enhance performance.

Develop game strategies/plans by analyzing opponent strengths and weaknesses and athlete abilities.

Guide other coaching personnel in instructional techniques, practice organization, and supervision guidelines.

Identify program needs and recommend expenditures for activities, equipment, and supplies.

Implement practice schedules and related events to ensure efficient operation.

Instruct student athletes to promote growth in skills, teamwork, and sportsmanship.

Maintain records (statistics, insurance, permission forms, emergency info, schedules, inventories) to comply with requirements.

Monitor student athletes’ academic eligibility and provide interventions as needed.

Oversee assistant coaches, student managers, volunteers, ensuring direction and monitoring activities.

Promote the athletic program through clinics, skill camps, community meetings, etc.

Respond to inquiries from students, parents, school personnel, media, and college representatives.

Keep the athletic director informed of issues affecting the program.

Provide appropriate supervision for all athletes and students involved.

Explain and discuss the PVUSD Athletic Code of Conduct to all athletes.

Maintain high standards of conduct and serve as role models.

Ensure all coaches are cleared through PVUSD Human Resources.

Other Functions

Perform other related duties as assigned to ensure efficient and effective functioning of the unit.

Ability: communicate with diverse backgrounds; handle interruptions; exhibit leadership; maintain confidentiality; meet deadlines; model sportsmanship; motivate athletes; enforce discipline; provide team building; travel to off-campus events; work extended hours including evenings and weekends.

Responsibilities

Work under limited supervision following standardized practices; direct others within a small unit; use resources from other units; impact organization’s services.

Work Environment

Physical demands: occasional lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling; 20% sitting, 40% walking, 40% standing; exposure to temperature extremes and hazards.

Experience

Job‑related experience is required.

Education

High school diploma or equivalent.

Required Certifications

Valid Arizona Teaching Certificate or

Valid Arizona Substitute Certificate

NFHS Level 2 Certificate (National Federation of State High Schools)
