Investigations Support Officer – Cold Case
Seasonal substitute/part-time position, not to exceed 500 hours per year.

Location: Chesapeake, VA

Hours: Up to 25 hours per week, flexible Monday-Friday between 8am-5pm.

Pay: $24.93 – $33.04 per hour, salary based on qualifications and experience.

Pay Grade: GE10. Approved for City service.

Job Type: Seasonal/Substitute.

Summary: The Investigative Support Officer in the Cold Case (Homicide) Unit analyzes long-term homicide cases, digitizes historical records, reassesses evidence, and collaborates with investigators and forensic laboratories to advance unresolved cases.

Key Responsibilities

Conduct comprehensive review and analysis of cold case homicide files.

Organize, digitize, and modernize historical investigative records for accessibility and case development.

Identify previously overlooked leads, inconsistencies, and investigative opportunities.

Reassess physical and biological evidence in coordination with forensic partners and laboratories.

Apply current forensic advancements, including DNA databases and analytical tools, to historical cases.

Collaborate with detectives, regional cold case investigators, and task forces.

Prepare clear, detailed investigative summaries and case documentation to support follow-up actions.

Support case prioritization and structured review of long-term unsolved homicides.

Qualifications

High school diploma, GED, or equivalent, and completion of a DCJS certified law-enforcement academy.

Concentration in Psychology, Criminal Justice, or Administration of Justice preferred.

Two or more years of law-enforcement experience.

VCIN/NCIC certified operator (may be obtained after hire).

Minimum of 5 years of law-enforcement experience and VCIN certification preferred.
