Diesel Mechanic – Specialized Tree Equipment JOB OVERVIEW
Tri-State Tree Service is seeking a skilled Diesel Mechanic to maintain and repair our fleet of specialized tree service equipment, including bucket trucks, chippers, stump grinders, and heavy diesel machinery. This hands‑on role supports daily operations in our well‑equipped facility, ensuring optimal performance, safety, and compliance.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Maintenance & Repair
Diagnose and repair diesel engines, transmissions, brakes, and hydraulics
Perform preventive maintenance and emergency field repairs
Run diagnostic tests and verify repairs through test drives
Ensure equipment meets performance and safety standards
Advanced Technical Work
Troubleshoot electrical systems and use diagnostic software
Service aerial lifts, chippers, stump grinders
Execute major repairs: engine rebuilds, transmission overhauls, hydraulics
Conduct DOT inspections and maintain compliance
Shop Operations
Maintain service records and manage parts inventory
Order/install parts and maintain organized workspaces
Collaborate with crews on equipment performance and upgrades
SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS
Required
3+ years of experience with heavy equipment or diesel vehicles
Deep knowledge of diesel engines, hydraulics, and electrical systems
Skilled in using diagnostic software and tools
Valid driver’s license and clean MVR
Ability to read schematics and technical documents
Essential Skills
Strong diagnostic and repair problem-solving
Experience using power and hand tools
Detail-oriented with high-quality standards
Effective communicator with crews and managers
Proficient with computer-based diagnostics and logs
Physically able to lift heavy items and work outdoors
Preferred
Vocational diesel mechanic training or ASE certification
Experience with tree equipment (chippers, lifts, grinders)
DOT inspection certification
Specialized hydraulic system repair experience
Pre-Employment Requirements
This position requires successful completion of pre-employment screening, including but not limited to background verification, and motor vehicle record review. Employment is contingent upon satisfactory results of all required screenings. Candidates unable to meet these requirements should not apply.
COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS
Pay: Competitive hourly rate based on experience
Schedule: Monday–Friday, 40 hours/week

WORK ENVIRONMENT
Work in a modern shop with advanced tools and occasional job site visits. Emergency repairs may be needed outside regular hours during storms or peak seasons.
