
Administrative Law Judge - Worker's Compensation

Position Summary
The Worker’s Compensation Division is hiring five Administrative Law Judges to conduct worker’s compensation hearings and pre‑hearing and settlement conferences within Wisconsin. This blended remote and in‑office role will work at the downtown Madison location (201 E. Washington Ave.). The office is located near restaurants, live music, and other amenities.
Key Responsibilities
Conduct quasi‑judicial hearings, issue findings of fact, conclusions of law, and orders.
Preside at pre‑hearing and settlement conferences to narrow issues and settle disputes.
Draft orders that define the rights and responsibilities of the parties.
Provide answers and opinions to legal questions by phone, in‑person, and by correspondence.
Conduct mediations.
Salary Information
Starting pay ranges from $102,700 to $108,600 per year, depending on qualifications, reflecting appointment level 75 on the State Compensation Plan. Pay may vary for current state employees. A 12‑month probationary period applies.

Classification title: Attorney (schedule 09, range 75). Exempt under the Fair Labor Standards Act.
Qualifications
Licensure Requirement:
active law license in good standing in Wisconsin, required prior to appointment.
Required Experience:
conducting legal research, analysis, and writing for administering due process for a tribunal; appearing before, clerking for, or acting as a decision‑maker in such a tribunal.
Nice to Have:
Experience serving as an administrative law judge or hearing officer.
Experience with at least two of the following: labor law, federal disability law, personal injury, civil law, administrative law, workers compensation law.
Additional qualifications may be evaluated in subsequent steps of the selection process.
