Job Description
The internship will provide employment and educational opportunities as the intern will learn the inter-workings of the 4-H program and Extension programming. The intern will work closely with Extension Educators, approved adult volunteers, 4-H families, and youth up to grade 12. The Steuben County Summer Program Assistant will primarily be responsible for supporting the Steuben County 4-H Program and the 4-H Youth Development Extension Educator. They will help develop educational programming, conduct educational activities, and provide overall program support. They will help all Educators and Staff in the Steuben County Office as needed.
Responsibilities
Network with media outlets, volunteers, and 4-H youth
Maintain a positive social media presence for 4-H and Purdue Extension
Plan and facilitate Mini 4-H Camp
Plan and facilitate educational 4-H project workshops
Plan and implement a short-term 4-H experience that sparks youth interest in a particular topic
Revamp and/or recreate 4-H materials to promote increased learning
Supervise and delegate 4-H Jr. Leaders
Compile event registrations
Prepare and submit new releases
Develop displays to promote 4-H and Purdue Extension
Prepare for the 4-H fair and 4-H judging
Keep accurate 4-H records
Assist with livestock shows and auction preparations
Create and assemble signs/posters and laminate documents
Pack supplies and help move the office to and from the fairgrounds
Conduct inventory procedures
Assist at the 4-H fair and fair clean-up days
Coordinate State Fair project preparation and delivery
Occasional assistance in assembling Agricultural and Natural Resources, Community Development, and Health and Human Sciences Program materials
General office efforts – answer phones, transfer calls, take messages, work with clientele, make copies, file papers, create documents, use the computer, compile mailings, maintain confidentiality, etc
Work Environment
Most responsibilities are carried out at the Steuben County Extension Office in a professional office setting.
During the summer, approximately two weeks are spent supporting activities at the Steuben County 4-H Fair, which may involve outdoor work and exposure to dust, dirt, and varying weather conditions.
The workplace fosters a collaborative and supportive atmosphere, where team members bring diverse skills, share common goals, and value respect, teamwork, and a positive sense of humor.
Qualifications
Strong computer proficiency and effective communication skills are required.
Working knowledge of 4-H programs is preferred.
Demonstrated ability to work well with people, adapt quickly to changing situations, and effectively plan, coordinate, and implement activities.
Must have access to reliable transportation.
Valid driver’s license is required.
High school diploma or GED/HSE equivalent required.
Compensation
Hourly wage: $18.00
Estimated total summer earnings: $4,500–$5,000
