5 Ways to Interact With the News Applications Community

News applications teams are starting to pop up in newsrooms all over the place — yep, even I’m on one. As is the case for any new concept in the journalism world, we’re all still trying to figure out how to do it the right way. No one has all the right answers, but we can all learn from each other both in terms of technical and cultural problem-solving and collaboration. Here are a few resources you can use if you’re just getting started with a news apps team.

1. ProPublica’s news applications style guide

Similar to The Associated Press’s general style guide, the news apps style guide from ProPublica outlines best practices around everything from bylines to hovers to meta tags.

The best part? It’s on Github, meaning you can fork it and push your revisions back to master.

2. News apps sub-Reddit

For you Redditors out there, a brand new subreddit for sharing news apps links, sharing your work or asking questions. Not much there yet, but it could build into a great community.

3. #newsapps IRC chat

On deadline looking for quick help on something? There’s an IRC going with roughly 40 news apps participants (and growing!) at hand to help you out.

4. NICAR-L

Though the NICAR listserv is for community-assisted reporting and contains conversation across a large spectrum of reporting topics, most of it is relevant to what news apps teams are doing and many news apps people are there to answer questions. No question is a dumb question on the listserv!

5. Follow news apps teams

Here’s a short list of organizations’ blogs and Twitter accounts you can follow to keep up with the latest.

Did I miss anyone? Let me know and I’ll update the list.
