Apple Newsstand Already Increasing Sales For Digital Publishers

Apple’s newest operating system, iOS 5, was released just last week, but digital publishers are already seeing a dramatic uptick in sales. This increase is thanks to Apple Newsstand, a new feature similar to iBooks that aggregates magazine and newspaper app subscriptions into one easy to use destination. As Apple writes, “New purchases go directly to your Newsstand folder. Then, as new issues become available, Newsstand automatically updates them in the background — complete with the latest covers. It’s kind of like having the paper delivered to your front door. Only better.”

PaidContent reports that two major news app sellers, Exact Editions and Future Publishing, have both seen major increases in sales numbers in only a week following iOS 5′s release. According to PaidContent, Exact Editions has stated that “downloads of freemium sample editions jumped by 14x in just a few days, whilst some titles’ actual sales have more than doubled.”

Meanwhile, the Association of Online Publishers notes that Future Publishing has seen more than two million Apple Newsstand downloads in four days, a 750% boost in sales.

These early statistics buoy what publishers were hoping for upon the release of Apple iOS 5: that Apple Newsstand will present digital publishers with unique opportunities to broaden their reach and connect with new readers who may not have found their publications otherwise.

It’s only been a week since Newsstand launched, so it’s still very early in the game. But these new statistics are incredibly encouraging for digital publishers hoping to successfully monetize tablet content.
