The Latin Kitchen Accepts Freelance Pitches That Target English-Speaking Latinos

Latina magazine’s sister site, The Latin Kitchen, is all about celebrating the connection between food and the culture of English-speaking Latinos. As a niche food-and-drink site, The Latin Kitchen is able to set itself apart from other online foodie destinations.

“We don’t have any direct competitors, but we look at sites like Epicurious, Food Republic, Delish, Huffington Post Food and others,” said editor-at-large Marie Elena Martinez. With a strong focus on Latin traditions, The Latin Kitchen gives its readers something more than just the standard tips on how to make the best burgers.

The Latin Kitchen is 75 percent freelance written and no section is off limits; however, if you plan on pitching its most popular section, “Recipes,” you’ll need to follow strict guidelines:

Recipe developers must have their own successful food blog and recipes must be triple-tested before submission. If the recipe is not original to the contributor, permission must be obtained from the chef, mixologist or cookbook author who created it.

Writers looking to land a byline might also want to include their own high-resolution photographs with their submissions, which helps out the small in-house staff.

A Fashion Blogger Shares Tips on Creating a Successful Blog

Blogging is on the front line of digital media, and while the accessibility of creating your own blog may seem like a lighthearted hobby to do on a Sunday morning Vicki Sullivan, founder of Aspiring Socialite, explains there’s more to it than that.

When done strategically, blogging can be a lucrative career that involves doing what you truly love. In our latest Journalism Advice article, Sullivan explains the steps writers should take when starting their own fashion blog (or any blog for that matter.)

In particular, one of her key points is to not see your fellow bloggers as competition; instead, use this network to your advantage:

“It’s been my experience that collaborating with other bloggers increases your traffic and social media following much more than if you were going at it alone,” Sullivan said.

Woman’s Day Pays up to $2 a Word for Straightforward, Feel-good Writing

womans-day-january-2014Woman’s Day knows that its readers (women ages 30 to 90) are incredibly busy, and they crave easily digestible advice on everything from cooking and home decor to health and money matters.

The editors are looking for writers with a straightforward tone and the ability to do their research before sending a pitch — reading back issues of the mag (at least the past 12 months) is invaluable. Knowing which section to pitch and what type of reader to cater to is also key:

A writer’s best entryway onto the pages of the mag is a front-of-book section called “Embrace the Day,” focused on community and giving to others. It’s a special place in the hearts of Woman’s Day readers. “We did a story six months ago about a woman who makes cakes for children with cancer. Another editor and I discussed it and she said, ‘do you want to put a call-out for people to give?’ The woman didn’t have a 501(c)(3), so I didn’t feel comfortable soliciting donations on her behalf. But it didn’t matter,” [executive editor Annemarie Conte] shares. “Our readers found her. One even wrote in and taped a $100 bill to her letter. Our readers are incredibly giving and want to find deserving places to give.”

NY Post Reporter on How to Create a Successful Blog: ‘Consistency’

Jozen Cummings likes to call himself a professional ‘date-maker’ and that’s an accurate description for his career as of late. Cummings is the dating reporter for the New York Post‘s Meet Market column, and he runs the blog ‘Until I Get Married,’ where he shares the ups and downs of bachelorhood.

Cummings, whose writing has appeared everywhere from Essence to The New York Times Magazine, had no dating-related clips to show for himself when he initially went in for the interview at the Post. But he did have his personal blog on the topic, which helped him land the gig.

In the latest installment of Mediabistro’s So What Do You Do?, Cummings talks about setting up blind dates, his writing process and how to cultivate a following on your blog:

Now that you’ve been kind of accidentally intentional with your blog’s success, what advice would you give up-and-coming bloggers to optimize their blog’s popularity? 

I think the most important thing is to find a schedule and be as consistent as possible with it because that’s the thing that people need in order to engage — consistency. It’s more important that you publish your post on the same day every week than it is for you to write five different times five days a week. Do it once a week for four weeks at the same time and then the fifth week, have a post ready, but don’t post. Give it a day. And I guarantee there will be somebody who you didn’t know was reading who will hit you up and say, “Yo, where’s my post?”

How Should Journalists Be Paid in The Digital Age?

Journalism is in a state of flux. Traditional newspapers are in decline, Millennial-centric sites like BuzzFeed are actually making a profit and sponsored content is now the norm.

Writer compensation is constantly evolving, too. What’s a fair salary for a digital journalist these days? There are plenty of payment methods out there. Gawker famously tried the pay-per-pageview model. Writers went overboard with galleries and articles on celebrity sex scandals, and realizing that pageviews were too easy to inflate, the experiment ultimately ended. They now base their goals on unique visitors attracted. Other sites, like Complex, pay their writers based on overall percentage of company revenue, among other metrics.

10,000 Words recently spoke (via email) to Coates Batemanthe executive director of digital programming strategy at Forbes Media, about the conundrum of how to pay digital journalists. The first thing Bateman told us was that Forbes has never used the pay-per-pageview model. What asked what he thought of this type of payment, he replied: ”We cannot speak for others. Our model is about individual experts building audiences and communities around their knowledge. That is why we choose to compensate based on unique visitors.”

The assumption that basic journalistic standards go out the window when clickability is king isn’t necessarily true, Bateman says. Read more
