NY Post Reporter on How to Create a Successful Blog: ‘Consistency’

Jozen Cummings likes to call himself a professional ‘date-maker’ and that’s an accurate description for his career as of late. Cummings is the dating reporter for the New York Post‘s Meet Market column, and he runs the blog ‘Until I Get Married,’ where he shares the ups and downs of bachelorhood.

Cummings, whose writing has appeared everywhere from Essence to The New York Times Magazine, had no dating-related clips to show for himself when he initially went in for the interview at the Post. But he did have his personal blog on the topic, which helped him land the gig.

In the latest installment of Mediabistro’s So What Do You Do?, Cummings talks about setting up blind dates, his writing process and how to cultivate a following on your blog:

Now that you’ve been kind of accidentally intentional with your blog’s success, what advice would you give up-and-coming bloggers to optimize their blog’s popularity? 

I think the most important thing is to find a schedule and be as consistent as possible with it because that’s the thing that people need in order to engage — consistency. It’s more important that you publish your post on the same day every week than it is for you to write five different times five days a week. Do it once a week for four weeks at the same time and then the fifth week, have a post ready, but don’t post. Give it a day. And I guarantee there will be somebody who you didn’t know was reading who will hit you up and say, “Yo, where’s my post?”

Bloggers Are Not Journalists Rules Portland Judge

In the ongoing debate on journalist vs. blogger, a Portland judge’s recent ruling draws a clear distinction between the two. Crystal Cox, a self-identified investigative blogger, was sued by the investment firm Obsidian Finance Group for defamation. She wrote several articles that were highly critical of the firm’s co-founder Kevin Padrick, who told OregonLive.com “The damage to me is forever. The Internet is not capable of being undone.”

U.S. District Judge Marco A. Hernandez decided that Cox is not entitled to protection under Oregon’s media shield law because she is not “affiliated with any newspaper, magazine, periodical, book, pamphlet, news service, wire service, news or feature syndicate, broadcast station or network, or cable television system.” He disagrees with her self-identification as “media,” but goes on to say that even if she were entitled protection, it would not be granted due to the case being a “civil action for defamation.”

This case highlights the gap between our slow-to-change institutions and the always-changing Internet. As Matthew Ingram at GigaOm pointed out, there are “shield laws” in 40 states, “but some have been updated to include cover newer forms of media such as blogs, and others haven’t.” Just a little bit north in Washington state, Cox would’ve been protected by an expanded shield law. Google’s Blogger Network Gets A Makeover

For news organizations without their own branded CMS, Blogger is one of the top blogging platforms out there. However, it’s no secret that WordPress is favored amongst blogging types for its extreme customizability and clean navigation. Today, Google announced a much-needed overhaul of the entire editing and management Blogger system, a move which will align the UI with their recent Gmail and Calendar redesigns. So, what’s different?

  • Clean and simple blogging interface: According to Google’s blog, “The post editor has been expanded and simplified to give you a larger canvas for drafting and previewing your work.” The whole UI of the post editor is fresher and much easier to use.
  • Integrated stats: Blogger’s Dashboard now offers a snapshot of Google Analytics for bloggers to better understand and grow their target audiences.
  • Recommended blogs: Google is renowned for their creepily accurate recommendations, and now the Dashboard will recommend blogs you may be interested in based on your blog’s content.

Blogger’s new look comes at a time when Google is redesigning a large portion of their products to keep with a unified user experience. What do you think of the redesign?
