And You Long to be Something Better than You are Today: Hillary and Vogue

14vogue.gifAdd another one to Hillary Clinton‘s list of if onlys and what-might-have-beens. Vogue writer Julia Reed (who’s out promoting her new book) tells WWD that according to Howard Wolfson (Clinton’s communications director) Hillary backed out of doing the cover of the fashion bible last December because the Clinton camp felt they already had “the women’s vote in the bag…We thought we were going to be in a bigger dogfight. We don’t need you anymore.” This after months of painful schmoozing on Reed’s part to seal the deal. Says Reed of her time spent: “Let me just say, it’s not the most fun thing in the world to have breakfast a million times with Howard Wolfson. The man is the most charmless human being on the planet, and I’m sitting there sucking up to him.”

Some of you may recall Vogue editrix Anna Wintour expressed her unhappiness with the decision in February’s issue saying “Imagine my amazement … when I learned that Hillary Clinton, our only female presidential hopeful, had decided to steer clear of our pages at this point in her campaign for fear of looking too feminine.” She proceeded to dedicate the entire issue to Hillary.

Clinton isn’t the only one Reed is dishing on. Apparently Barbara Bush was not into her Vogue debut either. Maybe it’s just that they’re all saving up their best smiles for US Weekly.
