Bloomberg Donated $279 Million to Charities Last Year

Yesterday Slate published its “Slate 60” list, an annual compilation of the most philanthropic Americans, and our very own media mogul/mayor Michael Bloomberg came in second overall, by donating almost $280 million to various charities and causes.

Bloomberg spread that money out too, donating to over 950 different groups. Some of the more local ones included Alliance for Young Artists & Writers, El Museo del Barrio, Food Bank for New York City, Jewish Association for Services for the Aged, Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, Metropolitan Opera Association, and the Natural Resources Defense Council.

Nice to see Bloomberg on the list, especially coming in at number two (behind George Soros). Another notable name – though not New York related – was Mark Zuckerberg, who donated the 10th most, at $100 million. Someone that young donating so much is unusual. FishbowlNY was also surprised to see that Oprah wasn’t on the list at all. C’mon Oprah – that’s not the way to impress a new half-sister.
