Bon Jovi and Axl Rose: Reports from the New York holiday party

rock on.jpgFollowing up on Fishbowl’s “Lunch At Michael’s” exclusive on a smiley, jokey Adam Moss, we sent a spy to the New York holiday party last night at Encore on 25th street. Were there group hugs? Well, if you consider joining together in joyous song and sweet, uplifting music to be a group hug – as Fishbowl does, frankly – then yes, dammit, there were.

Perhaps it was the “giant posters of Axl Rose on the wall” but apparently the New York staffers were inspired to sing up a storm (and please, next time do let Fishbowl know, we do a mean “Hit Me With Your Best Shot”) but apparently the standout performance of the night was Bon Jovi’s “Wanted: Dead or Alive,” which was the envy of a certain other staffer whose identity I have pledged to protect (okay, Adam Sternbergh ): “I might have ventured to the stage except someone sang my song: Dead Or Alive, by Bon Jovi, admittedly a karaoke staple. (And whoever the guy was who sang it was pretty awesome.)” UPDATE: Mystery singer is apparently one Matt Dobkin, and is apparently quite fetching, too. A cowboy. On a steel horse he rides. In-deed. Sternbergh also reports a “pretty rocking rendition of “Add It Up” by the Violent Femmes, sung by a quartet of adventurous people — because, when you think about it, that’s a pretty unorthodox choice for an office party” (don’t shoot shoot shoot that thing at me, Adam Moss!).

Speaking of, sadly there were no reports of a Moss performance BUT group hugs were expressed in the form of after-party revelry: word on the street/drunkenly emailed to us at 2am was that partiers including John Homans, Ariel Kaminer, Ariel Levy, Jen Senior, Stephen Rodrick, Jeremy McCarter, Emma Rosenblum, Ben Mathis-Lilley, Sternbergh, and, yes, Moss repaired for some late-night chow to “a place called, maybe, Fishbait or something like that at 25th? and Madison” (which we couldn’t find on Google but we are nonetheless taking as a shout-out). Says our tipster: “We all ate chicken fingers and drank a lot. It was actually really fun and only an upgrade in comparison to Encore.”

Okay so now that’s TWO examples of Adam Moss letting go and having fun. Three’s a trend, people! Add it up.

Add It Up [Violent Femmes]

UPDATE: Great blogging minds who are jealous of missing fun parties think alike – check out what Gawker’s tipsters had to say here. Clearly Karaoke parties strike a nerve. Oh, and apparently someone else sang “Hit Me With Your Best Shot.” Fire away!

UPDATE TO THE UPDATE: New reports from the party! Bruce Wasserstein did “a brief but friendly walkthrough” (but not, we gather, rockthrough – ooh! Karaoke pun!); flaxen-haired publicist Serena Torrey did shots with COO Kit Taylor, the CFO Matt Garman, and circulation director Ken Sheldon; there were “red glittery phalluses, fake ice cubes and dreydls decorating the tables” (becauase nothing puts the “Happy” in your Holidays like a big, glittery phallus); and best of all there was an ad sales/production dept. makeout on the dance floor! Aw! We can almost see the disco ball turning above. SO ROMANTIC.

UPDATE TO END ALL UPDATES: Ladies and gentlemen, we’ve got a trend: Adam Moss was in on those shots. PARTY ANIMAL! Rock on, Adam! We’re totally hugging you the next time we see you.
