Complex Editor Out

complex_pharrell_sm.jpgComplex editor Richard Martin has left the magazine. Deputy editor Noah Callahan-Bever has been named as his replacement.

While reason for the change is unclear, the move is curious, as Complex is up 17 percent in ad pages through November over 2005.

Martin expressed his frustrations to mediabistro.com earlier this year with what he considered “lip-service” to diversity and close-mindedness of the consimer magazine industry.

“I think any diversity initiative is just lip-service,” Martin said.

He also balked at those who describe Complex as an “urban” magazine: “When someone calls us ‘urban,’ I consider it straight-up racist.”
