David Halberstam’s Driver Sentenced

0214halberstam.jpgThe driver in the tragic car crash that killed David Halberstam has been sentenced to five days in county jail, a driving course and 200 hours of community service. Berkeley graduate student Kevin Jones was recommended for a sherrif’s work program by Judge Mark Forcum — which means he will most likely not spend any time behind bars.

“This is one of the hardest types of cases,” Forcum said before pronouncing sentence in San Mateo County Superior Court in Redwood City. Forcum noted that Halberstam had been killed because of Jones’ actions, but that Jones hadn’t acted intentionally and appeared to be remorseful. Jones apologized in court to Halberstam’s family and said he would dedicate his journalism career to trying to live up to Halberstam’s ideals. “His memory will guide my decisions for the rest of my life,” Jones said. He declined to comment as he left court with his wife and attorney.
