Ellin Saltzman to Suzy Menkes: Don't Whine
The ongoing Suzy Menkes-Marc Jacobs feud has ensorcelled former Glamour editor Ellin Saltzman. Salzman wrote to David Patrick Columbia's New York Social Diary defending the Marc Jacobs show, which was two hours late, from the ire International Herald Tribune columnist Suzy Menkes. Menkes, you'll remember, told WWD last week ''I would like to murder him with my bare hands and never see another Marc Jacobs show in my life." New York Social Diary relayed some of the more incendiary quotes from Menkes' September 12 vivisection of Jacobs in the IHT on Friday. Saltzman, who is the mother of Vanity Fair's powerful Fashion Director Elizabeth Saltzman, responded to the Suzy Menkes column in today's NYSD: ''Marc calls me mom ... I have been a supporter of Marc since he was 18. He is a pal of my daughter Elizabeth. He is possibly the most highly regarded American designer. It would be a very sad thing for American Fashion Week if Marc decides not to show in NYC -- either his Marc Jacobs collection or his Marc by Marc collection (secondary one). ''I have waited in Paris for shows to start ... way back when it was Valentino who was late. We used to take bets and put money on the hour and minute when his show would start. Vivienne Westwood was always late. Azzedine Alaia was often so late and then might decide not to show at all as you were waiting. Suzy Menkes should know these problems. And she should understand and perhaps scold a little but not whine and not try to destroy. Big f--king deal. Yes it was annoying but many people got last minute calls telling them not to arrive at 9 but rather to arrive at 10:30 and the show would start at 11. And it did.
