Friday Layoffs at Newsday, Paper to Cut 5% of Workforce

Newsday_logo.pngNormally news that Newsday plans to layoff 100 people or 5% of it work force would send everyone into a Friday afternoon flurry. But coming at the end of the sort of week the media and publishing world has just experienced (not to mention the new unemployment numbers for the country) it is terrible but also somewhat par for the course.

Newsday‘s publisher Timothy P. Knight said that in the coming days “there will be additional job eliminations across the company. In total, we expect to reduce about 5 percent of our workforce.” In a memo to staff, editor John Mancini said the cuts would include “three sports columnists, an undetermined number of photographers and a reporter/researcher in the Albany bureau.” Some staffers will apparently be required to take on different jobs and those most affected will be offered buyouts
