Gannett Tries Paywalls on Three of Its Newspaper Sites

gannett07022010.pngUSA Today parent Gannett has inched toward an online subscription model by rolling out subscription fees for its Tallahassee Democrat, Greenville News and St. George, Utah’s Spectrum, Poynter Online reports.

Gannett is charging $9.95 a month for online-only subscriptions at all three papers. Kate Marymont, vice president of news for Gannett’s Community Publishing Division, told Ponter, “We know this is not the model, this is a small-scale test.”

The “test” is part of an effort to figure out Gannett’s long-term pay strategy, Marymont said. The company is trying to determine what local and specialized content readers will be willing to pay for.
