Harper’s Runs David Foster Wallace Correspondence

dfw10.15.083.jpgUntil his passing, David Foster Wallace was a contributing editor at Harper’s (The magazine put the author’s impressive archives online after his suicide in September.)

In November’s issue, Harper’s continues to champion the writer, running a series of letters DFW wrote to students in Anne Fadiman‘s advanced nonfiction class at Yale after they read “Getting Away from Already Pretty Much Being Away from It All,” a finalist for a 1995 National Magazine Award.

The letters offer an intimate portrait of a caring, albeit tough, teacher who looked after the welfare of students in his class and those in other classes. It’s a fitting tribute to a man whose talent for imparting wisdom was always overshadowed by his brilliant writing.

The intro and one of his letters. Tally ho.
