Hot 97 DJ Cipha Sounds Suspended Indefinitely for Haitian Remark

Hot 97/WQHT morning show DJ Cipha Sounds (real name Luis Diaz) is in hot water after an on-air comment he made on Friday.

Sounds said, “The reason I’m HIV negative is because I don’t mess with Haitian girls.”

Emmis suspended the DJ indefinitely. The company also is ordering Sounds to undergo “sensitivity training focused on the Haitian community and specifically, the challenges …faced in terms of the HIV epidemic.”

Hot 97 also says it will work with local community leaders to use the station’s influence to increase awareness of HIV and community programs to address the HIV epidemic.

“The Haitian community is an important part of our listenership whom we respect and value,” said Alex Cameron, SVP/Market Manager of Emmis New York. ”The suspension is an indication of the importance we place on delivering a product that respects our Haitian audience.”

The remark by Sounds, which he later apologized for, drew the ire of the Haitian community.

Haitian community leaders and elected officials met yesterday pushing for Sounds dismissal for Hot 97.

In light of the punishment given to Sounds, FishbowlNY reached out to the spokeswoman for Haitian Roundtable and coalition of Haititan organizations, to see if they felt it was harsh enough.

“We have no further comment at this time,” the spokeswoman says.

She says the Haitian Community Forum was scheduled to meet tonight “to discuss next steps and mobilization against Cipha Sounds and Hot 97 management.”
