J.J. Abrams Attacks New York

The trailer to J.J. Abrams‘ latest film, Cloverfield, shows partygoers at a rooftop party watching helplessly as New York is destroyed. Screening in many cases before Transformers, the preview is shot with a camcorder, Blair Witch style, and ends with a chunk of the Statue of Liberty falling into the street. Abrams is also unleashing one of the most ambitious viral marketing efforts the film industry has seen in years and, according to USA Today, is “Hollywood’s biggest experiment with reverse psychology” to date. Promotional sites for the film such as 1-18-08.com and EthanHaasWasRight.com are offering online puzzles whose solutions indicate that Abrams is making a Cthulu movie.

The science fiction nerds will be very happy this winter.
