Laid Off USA TODAY Editor Has Message For Bosses: Good Luck Steering The Titanic

usatodaylogo.jpgUSA TODAY travel editor Chris Gray Faust was one of the 26 people given the boot by the national newspaper this week.

Today, Faust says goodbye to her “dream job” in a post on The Huffington Post, the likes of which are becoming all too frequent these days. In it, Faust seems to shoot through the stages of grief from shock and pain through anger to, finally, hope and acceptance (although her last words to her former employer are not without a note of bitterness).

Says Faust:

“I’ve been laid off from my dream job, and I’m not going to lie. It sucks.”

Don’t we know it. But, all is not lost.

Seems like things weren’t so great at USA TODAY after all:

“I’d go to conferences and meet people who were making it just fine on their own. Some were creating niche businesses, busting up the paradigm. Others were parlaying old school media talents into fresh ventures, with a moxie that made me wish I had the freedom to emulate them. The air inside USAT‘s towers on Jones Branch Drive always seemed a little stale after that.”

We think Faust is going to do just fine out there in the world, following the lead of those “freelancers-slash-entrerpreneurs” we’ve been seeing so much of these days. But for all her hope for what lies ahead, Faust couldn’t sign off without one parting shot to USA TODAY‘s execs:

“So to the managers who made this decision, in less than 140 characters I tell you: Good luck steering the Titanic. And thanks for the head start. Now I’m really going to run.”

Good luck, Chris!
