Larry Hackett Named ASME President Among Slew Of New ASME Appointments

Larry Hackett, the managing editor of People magazine, has been named ASME’s new president, succeeding Runner’s World editor in chief David Willey.

Said Hackett:

It’s an exciting, challenging time for the magazine industry, and I look forward to working with the ASME board as an advocate for editorial excellence and independence. I also want to thank David Willey for his superb stewardship these past two years.

Other appointments decided upon during the American Society of Magazine Editors’ annual meeting last month include keeping Peggy Northrop on as vice-president, electing Lucy Danziger (editor in chief of Self) secretary, and naming Rosemary Ellis, (editor in chief of Good Housekeeping) treasurer.

In addition, seven new ASME board members were chosen for two-year terms: Chris Anderson, editor in chief of Wired; James Bennet, editor of The Atlantic; Harriette Cole, acting editor in chief of Ebony; Ariel Foxman, managing editor of InStyle; Chris Johns, editor in chief of National Geographic; Kaitlin Quistgaard, editor in chief of Yoga Journal; and Mimi Valdes, editor in chief of Kidult.com. (Valdes just stepped down from her role as editorial director of Latina.)

James B. Meigs, editor in chief of Popular Mechanics, was reelected to his second term on the board and Mark Jannot, editor in chief of Popular Science, was appointed to a full term.
