Legendary East Village Journalist Bar To Close?

Sad news from East Village dive bar Mona’s. The New York Post is reporting that the bar, along with sister bar Sophie’s, is up for sale. The two spots will go on the market after Christmas. No word on potential owners or anything of the sort.
So why did news of the sale of an obscure Avenue B drinking spot make the New York Post? Simple: Mona’s is one of New York’s great journalist bars. It’s been around from the seventies and has always attracted writers, especially freelance mag types and Posties, like flies to wallpaper. We know a few dozen journos who are going to be crying if the place becomes yet another tapas bar or Duane Reade — and we’re going to be one of them. First Siberia and now this…
If any bar owners with plans for expansion are reading this (psst, Tile Bar/WCOU Radio, we’re talking to you), buy Mona’s and Sophie’s for the love of God. Everything good about the East Village is disappearing.
