Massive exodus at Budget Living
Yikes! Budget Living has not had a good day – a whopping EIGHT staffers, mostly high-level editors, have resigned. A tipster on the inside gave us the dramatic news thusly: “In the wake of Sarah Gray Miller’s sudden departure and the promotion of her long-time friend, executive editor Alex Bhattacharji to editor, eight staffers have resigned — most of whom do not have full time employment lined up.”
Yowsers. Here they are, in order of their resignations:
Iris Sutcliffe, Managing Editor
Mina Cheong, Market Assistant
Clover Archer, Production Manager
Sonia Zjawinski, Home Market Editor
Gabrielle Porcaro, Market Assistant
Sari Globerman, Senior Editor
InSung Cho, Fashion Market Editor
Jessie Paolucci, Acting Deputy Editor
Pretty harsh rebuke to the newly-appointed Bhattacharji and to publisher Don Welsh who has been trying to reposition the magazine to compete with upscale shopping titles like Lucky and Domino, changing the masthead to minimize the “Budget” part and glossing up the look (in anticipation of a sale? There has been speculation that Welsh is sprucing it up for a buyer, though he denied that was the case). The resignation of founding editor Gray Miller in early April after three years seemed completely amiable, but this latest development raises obvious doubts…
We’ll update the story as the intel comes in (so send it in, people!). In the meantime, track the Budget Living staff swappage here.
