Friday, Mar 24

Media Minutiae: Adam Morrison Sobbing Uncontrollably Edition

  • Truthiness: Post-James Frey, memoirists give us way too much information.

  • Gawker's New Home Officially Hinted: In an advertorial post.

  • Fine: BusinessWeek's resident humorist says Time Inc.'s Office Pirates experiment is decidedly Web 1.0.

  • My Old Plateglass Window Home: Vermont editors want answers over AP chief's firing.

  • These Are Publishing Jobs Too, You Know: Farm Journal's Pam Henderson and Andrew Burchett presented with a Neal Award at the Waldorf for "Asian Soybean Rust Takes Root in the U.S." series.

Thursday, Mar 23

Media Minutiae: Meth, Fix Edition

  • Web 2.0 or Star Wars Character?: You decide.

  • 5 Ways to Fix Time Warner: No. 1? Become stable enough that your own business magazine doesn't write an article about 5 ways to fix you.

  • You need us: for news.

  • Stalk Market: Gawker's Stalker is "a small but spirited grenade" lobbed into the arena of celebrity journalism, says CBC's Jeff MacIntyre.

  • Meth Manufacturing: that's what the Oregonian did with its stories on meth, says Willamette Week.

Tuesday, Mar 21

Media Minutiae: Blood-Soaked Edition

  • Saltzy: Village Voice critic Jerry Saltz peppers the New Yorker with literary birdshot over its profile of Sotheby's auctioneer Tobias Meyer. (via Arts Journal)

  • Can't wait for Simon Cowell's American Mongolian Cow Sour Yogurt Supergirl Contest: One of China's most popular shows, an American Idol knockoff called American Mongolian Cow Sour Yogurt Supergirl Contest (not kidding), faces a government crackdown.

  • Blood money: Human-rights activists scorch the Times for taking advertising from Sudan, reports Lloyd Grove.

  • Barron William Trump: Ahem.

Monday, Mar 20

Media Minutiae: Monday Edition

  • Redesigned: WNYC's website gets a much-needed overhaul. Unclear whether it was the trickle-down effect from an NPR flush with cash.

  • Hachette gets the hatchet: Another year, another nom-less National Magazine Awards for Hachette Filipacchi Media. Surprising, too, since Hachette's prez, Jack Kliger, now presides over the Magazine Publishers of America board.

  • 'Chicken,' Tivoed: KFC's stunt embedding a coupon into a commercial so as to entice Tivo users paid off — with 100,000 biting, says the Wall Street Journal.

  • HuffPo-Clooney Reax: Bloggers react to the Arianna Huffington's Clooneygate, and at least one says whole thing is a non-controversy, or, rather, "the wrong controversy."

  • A Thriller Writer's Own Thriller: While on a family trip to Italy, Douglas Preston was accused of "planting evidence, and of being an accessory to murder after the fact, which scared the hell out of me," the Boston Globe reports.

Friday, Mar 17

Media Minutiae: Green Beer Edition

  • Google gets off: A suit accusing Google of wrongful conduct, including copyright infringement and defamation, was dismissed by a U.S. judge, the WSJ reports.

  • Dethroned: CNN on the defensive about rumors that Larry King is being pushed out of the Live chair.

  • Fine on the $4.5B Knight Ridder deal: "Pruitt is 48 and looks younger, which makes him a teenager compared with typical newspaper bosses. He has the hair, looks, and unruffled demeanor of a class president, but his references to the Rolling Stones and Elvis Costello reveal a desire to score points with the cool kids."

  • NYT reporters and editors on blogs: "Nobody would ever call them ncritical guzzlers of blog bilge," says Slate's Jack Schafer.

  • JT 2.0?: Just what we need, another memoirist controversy.

Wednesday, Mar 15

Media Minutiae: Late Edition

  • Plame Leakgate: More disputed intricacies in the Valerie Plame CIA leak case, courtesy of Vanity Fair. Like we needed more names to keep track of there.

  • Googled: A federal judge says Google will have to turn over some data culled from those who Google to the government, but not all.

  • Best — and Worst — Mag Cover Sales of '05: Deaths of Pope John Paul II, Hunter S. Thompson buoyed sales of Time and Newsweek, Rolling Stone respectively.

  • Staring down the stalker: Cable news beauty Monica Crowley faced her alleged stalker in court.

Tuesday, Mar 14

Media Minutiae: Loathsome, Stalking, Iconic Edition

  • Loathing: Jon Friedman nominates CNN's Lou Dobbs for President, then proceeds to hatchet Dobbs' stump like an axe-wielding woodsman at the Great Outdoor Games: "It's always interesting when you turn into what you loathe."

  • A-boo-boo Ghraib?: NYT to review the accuracy of a story that claimed to identify the hooded detainee shown in one of the most iconic photos of prison-abuse from Abu Ghraib after Salon kicks up dirt suggesting a false ID.

  • 60's Icon: Clock's officially ticking on Mike Wallace's storied run at 60 Minutes.

  • For those of us who need to know exactly where Lindsay Lohan was five minutes ago: Gawker's Stalker feature to get a Google mash-up.

Monday, Mar 13

Media Minutiae: By George Edition

  • By George: HuffPo nabs George Clooney's first post-Oscar-win role: liberal blogger. His post? Echoes of his Oscar acceptance speech, and with them, 114 comments.

  • Freyed: The LAT reports James Frey's TV pilot — about a world champion surfer/PI/"lover of ladies" named Donald "Insane" Tremaine — is "in a million little pieces, too." Now, how did that concept not work?

  • The Boyish Man Behind Laguna Beach: MTV head of series development Tony DiSanto, 37, loves the "The Andy Milonakis Show, but says it's "not for everybody."

  • A report from the 9th Annual USA Memory Championship, where contestants — including Slate's Joshua Foer, the eventual winner — competed for ... uh ... umm ... what were they competing for again?

Friday, Mar 10

Media Minutiae: It's Whiffleball Weather Edition

  • Mrs. Clinton, Observed: Watergate icon Carl Bernstein's book on Hillary Clinton will come out next year, says Politicker Ben Smith.

  • Fine: Time Warner CEO Dick Parsons loves Time, isn't retiring anytime soon and is definitely not bidding to succeed Mayor Bloomberg, says Jon Fine.

  • No doubt: Jane Pratt looks to Gwen Stefani for help on her return to magazines, reports WWD.

  • A Million Little ... ah, forget it: U.S. News & World Report's cover story examines the credibility of and online threats to the book publishing business.

  • 30 Rock Shock: Nothing like a media gossip story involving NBC's Brian Williams, an incestuous affair involving a pair of Nightly News producers and a BlackBerry to end your media week.

Thursday, Mar 09

Media Minutiae: Revolt Edition

  • Can't shareholders just blindly accept M+As?: Same companies that led a VNU shareholder revolt are at it again, and will "likely" try to block its sale.

  • HuffPo-wer: HuffPo's own Arianna Huffington debunks Secretary Rumsfeld's history of presidential approval ratings during wartime. Huff: "Only trouble is, it's completely bogus history. A brief fact check reveals that public support for WWII never slipped below 75 percent; Roosevelt's approval rating during the war never fell below 66%; and his disapproval rating never climbed above 25%." (And a thanks to AH for the heads-up.)

  • Stewart-Colbert 'rivalry' moves to the small screen: iTunes is offering 16 edpisodes of The Daily Show and Colbert Report for $9.95 a month.

  • Wiki on the plains: A South Dakota paper takes a stab at that freaky 'Wikitorial' thing again.
