Media Miscellany: 07.22.2005

Aaron Brown fills up our senses, like a night in a forest: Like the mountains in springtime, CNN anchor Aaron Brown talks to Golf Connoisseur about various and sundry things, but all we care about is his iPod. Apparently he's got "everything Paul Simon's ever done" and "everything from early Dylan to Norah Jones" (does that sound like much of an "everything" to you? I mean, where's the death metal, power punk, reggae-infused ska? Just wondering). The best part, though, as Gawker points out, is the "John Denver song that I hope no one ever asks me about." West Virginia Mountain Mama, we love games like this. Aaron Brown is our sleepy blue ocean. Did John Denver do more than three songs? We're out. [Gawker]

If you want to bring me something, make it something I can use...but don't nobody bring me no bad news: UnBeige today laments the gloom and doom over at the NYT this week (and if she's invoking Gina Kolata it's gotta be depressing!). First we find out that strength training doesn't make us skinny like those magazines promised, then to add insult to injury we're apparently paying far too much for our furniture. Thank goodness we're at least allowed a stiff drink. UnBeige, we feel your pain. [UnBeige]

Roman Polanski wins libel suit against Condé Nast: Oscar-winning director Roman Polanski won 50,000 GBP in libel damages from Condé Nast based on Vanity Fair's account of him hitting on a Swedish blonde shortly after the murder of hiw wife Sharon Tate. The allegation came from an anecdote told by Lewis Lapham who testified to that effect earlier this week. Lapham maintains that the episode happened though he admits to not being entirely sure of the date. Which kind of matters vis a vis labelling someone a scumbag for hitting on a woman while his dead wife's'body is still warm. Polanski denied the story from France via closed-circuit TV so as not to risk extradition in Britain to the US for a longstantding charge of statutory rape. Yes, I know you know all of this. But did you know that Graydon Carter, said this: "I find it amazing that a man who lives in France can sue a magazine that is published in America in a British courtroom." Kind of a good point. Then Graydon invokes his own 12-year old daughter in digust, referring to Polanski's dalliance with a 13-year old. Ick. Conde Nast has to pay 175,000 GBP in costs within 14 days, not including its own hefty legal bill. [BBC]
