CBS Journalists Kidnapped In Iraq![]() Brother blog TVNewser is reporting, along with the Committee to Protect Journalists and CBS News, some disturbing news from Iraq. Two CBS News employees have been kidnapped in Basra: An unnamed British citizen (whom we won't name as per CBS' request, but whose identity, of course, turns up on Google) and an Iraqi translator. Both were kidnapped from their hotel... Here's what happened: A caravan of eight SUVs arrived at the hotel in the morning demanding a guest list; the journos were kidnapped shortly afterwards. The identity of the group that kidnapped them is currently unknown. The eight SUVs contained about 20 armed men wearing Iraqi security services uniforms. Official statement from CPJ Exec. Director Joel Simon: We are deeply concerned for the safety of our colleagues, and hope they are located swiftly and safely. Iraq is the most dangerous country in the world for journalists and the deadliest conflict for the press in recent history. Journalists face incalculable risks in order to bring us the news from the frontlines.
Two journalists working for CBS News in Basra are missing. All efforts are underway to find them and until we learn more details, CBS News requests that others do not speculate on the identities of those involved. CBS News has been in touch with the families and asks that their privacy be respected. The British army recently ceded control of Basra province to the Iraqi authorities, but still maintain a presence in the city. (Image of safe, peaceable Basra via Power Line) Email This Post |
