Bonnie Fuller to Announce New 'Media' Venture 'Shortly'

bfullerhep1.jpgBonnie Fuller, no longer queen bee at American Media Inc., has something up her sleeve. "My next venture will be in media," she told us when we reached her by phone this evening. "I really can't give you any details... but there's something specific I want to do." She said she'll announce the new endeavor "shortly."

She called the decision to leave "100 percent" hers, adding that she was "thinking about the next stage in life and the new, exciting adventure I'll pursue."

When we asked her if she would be doing something at an established company (a la Brandon Holley, who jumped to Yahoo) or start her own site (like Tina Brown and her news aggregator), Fuller told us those were "very good questions," but declined to say more. Judging by her tone, we expect she'll have some very good answers much sooner than anyone anticipates.

Bonnie Fuller Steps Down at American Media

bonniefuller1.jpgBonnie Fuller, the "queen of tabloids," is no longer the EVP and chief editorial director at American Media Inc. She will continue to be an editor-at-large at Star (just like Julia Allison!) and a consultant to the company.

During Fuller's tenure at AMI, she helped transition Star from a tabloid to a glossy magazine and has overseen numerous redesigns of the company's other media properties.

"I am proud of the significant achievements of American Media's celebrity and fitness brands over the past five years, and I am now ready for a new adventure," she said in a statement.

Full release after the jump.

British Media: Drunks Like Us

cheers.jpgMaybe it's because we're hungover from the Laurel Touby-sponsored drinks last night, but this story from the BBC struck a chord with us this morning. According to a poll conducted by the Norwich Union Healthcare, "41 percent of people working in media and creative jobs said they had been to work while still drunk — four times the average." (Also, terrifyingly, 24 percent of construction workers admit to being drunk at work.)

Cary Cooper, Professor of Organizational Psychology and Health at Lancaster University, told the BBC, "It's no surprise there is a lot of drinking in the media; it's part of the culture to unwind with a drink. This is not about social drinking. This is about the long-hours culture we have in this country."

We knew it wasn't our fault. So Boddington's for lunch?

Gutfeld: Nick Denton 'Doesn't Like People Saying No to Him Apparently'

gutfeldtv_5-6.jpgWhether it be during his time at various magazines, in his book or on his Fox News show Red Eye, Greg Gutfeld has a habit of saying exactly what he thinks. The same is true in interviews. The complete Gutfeld "So What Do You Do?" mediabistro.com feature is running tomorrow.

To whet the appetite, here are his thoughts on Gawker. The back story: a couple weeks ago, Gutfeld attacked Gawker and its commenters over the Tony Snow-hospitalization story (an example — "If Karma existed, then that commenter would have accidentally left his real name so we could find him and beat the shit out of his stupid, fat face"). They in turn, went on the attack against Gutfeld. Although Gutfeld said, "I've always been a pretty big fan of them," he thinks he found the reason for the recent bad blood:

Nick Denton has asked me repeatedly to write for them, and I've said no, and I think that's what fuels his resentment towards me. He doesn't like people saying no to him apparently. But the only thing that bugs me, is when the writing's really good, it's great. I think Will Leitch at Deadspin is great, I loved Jessica Coen, Choire (Sicha) is awesome. I think in the drive to create more content, they get sloppy, but so what. And they're hypocrites. If you're going to go after people then people are going to go after you. That's the bottom line.

And By Nice We Assume You Mean Sharp, Witty, Intelligent, Addictive

Picture 17.pngEveryone's favorite "new" website Jezebel was profiled in everyone's favorite NYT's section this week-end. The Style Section article title "Not On Our Blog You Won't" is a snapshot of the Gawker-owned blog and its writers, and goes to some lengths to point out that the site has differentiated itself by frowning on nasty commenters.

Though the site is still plenty snarky, it steers clear of the vicious remarks about age and weight one finds elsewhere on gossip blogs. Readers of Jezebel find the kinder tone appealing.

The piece also describes the site as a "smart, feisty antidote to traditional women's magazines" that "appeals to a young, urban demographic" and has inspired a loyal following among it's readers (complete the requisite longing for "the old days" eleven months ago).

All of which is true. However we think it might also have been nice for the article to include some sort of reader demographic breakdown based on sex, since based on our own informal polls (primarily conducted during conversations had over drinks) the male readership of Jezebel is not to be dismissed. It's the sort of thing that might have gone some ways to demonstrating what we personally find most interesting about the whole Jezebel experiment; primarily that interesting women are just plain interesting to everyone. No "girly" labels required.

James Frey: New Book, Same Fraught Relationship With Honesty

jamesfrey_oprah.jpg

Ahead of his new novel's summer release, recovery community persona non grata — or is that exonerated mag-world feature-bait — James Frey is the subject of Evgenia Peretz's latest Vanity Fair profile opus in the mag's June issue. Bookish bro GalleyCat politely implies that Frey's claim of not doing any further media is about as sound as Jay-Z saying he's doing just this one last tour/album/impromptu club date.

Amid the 7,000+ words Monday-morning quarterbacking how Frey's A Million Little Pieces was intended by the author only as a semi-memoir yet was billed by his publisher as memoir gospel to the heartbreak of Oprah and actual addicts everywhere, causing it to blow up into, well, you know, this part struck us:

Media Hearts Hillary Like An Eight-Year-Old Boy In A Schoolyard

Tom Edsall at the Huffington Post is reporting that the media has suddenly "jumped ship from the Obama campaign and become a crucial Clinton ally."

Citing recent examples from Politico, The New Republic, Joe Klein at Time, and the Washington Post among others, Edsell says that "the new tenor of media coverage is visible almost everywhere" — except, once could add, the NYT's op-ed pages, or this week's cover of the ever-loving New Republic — and "the shift is a potential lifesaver as she struggles to keep her head above water."

Makes one wonder: has anyone notified Chris Matthews or Keith Olbermann?

Media Weddings: James Ledbetter Jr. and Erinn Bucklan

20BUCKLAN.jpgOver the weekend, James Ledbetter, editor-in-chief of TheBigMoney.com, and Quick & Simple writer Erinn Bucklan tied the knot at Calhoun College at Yale University in New Haven. Since mediabistro.com's a company founded on media people meeting each other (and "countless one-night stands," according to our illustrious founder), we figured it was our duty to inform you of the latest wedding. Congrats James and Erinn.

Alleged Non-Paying Mag Publisher's PR Team Can't Spell

Remember the story we broke in January about how Overtime owed thousands of dollars to freelancers, writers and vendors? (We do, as it consumed our lives for the better part of a week.) Looks like Ryan McNeil, the magazine's publisher, is back giving interviews just in time for the NFL Draft. In a priceless email obtained by FishbowlNY, a PR flack writes that the former NFL Pro Bowler "will be in NY fridy and is availble for all interviews." The email's below. We left the spelling intact.

From: [REDACTED] Sent: Thursday, April 24, 2008 4:28 AM To: [REDACTED] Subject: Interviewing Ryan Mcneil about postioning oneself for life after football by learning good business strategies on friday in ny?

With the Nfl Draft on Sarurday, Ryan Mcneil would make greatguest/interview on friday to talk about what players are gong through at the nfl draft and how they should think about starting to positon themselves for life after football or other major sports. He will be in NY fridy and is availble for all interviews.

All athletes need to know they have the power and potential to be successful in business.

Ryan won a nationl chmpionship at miami and was pro bowler in the nfl. Was a 10 year veteran cornerback/safety. There's a need or NFL players to secure their futures by learning good business strategies. And McNeil happens to run a company that does just that. From day one, I've looked at this game as a business to prepare for life after football

So to recap, if you're looking to interview a former NFL player who may or may not pay his employees and whose PR team may or may not be able to spell, McNeil's your man.

Brown Protesters Turn Tom Friedman Talk Into Double Dare Episode

tomfriedman.jpgLast night at Thomas Friedman's Brown University talk about the economic and foreign policy implications of green technology, The New York Times columnist got an unexpected surprise: a pie in the face. As the Brown Daily Herald reports, when Friedman began to speak, a female student jumped up from the front row, ran across the stage and threw a green pie into the writer's face. Simultaneously, a male accomplice threw pamphlets identifying the pair as the "Greenwash Guerillas" and featuring five reasons why "Thomas Friedman deserves a pie in the face."

After the incident, Friedman initially continued his speech before going backstage for a brief period to clean himself off. He eventually returned to the stage and delivered his speech, which detailed the findings in his new book, Hot, Flat and Crowded.

University spokesman Michael Chapman told the Herald that the thrower of the pie was apprehended and that Brown "will review this incident through its non-academic disciplinary system to determine the appropriate response."
