Katie Couric, qu'est-ce que c'est?

June 05 173.jpgWell, last night was Katie Couric's big 'get', the Jennifer Wilbanks Run-run-runaway Bride interview. If it was supposed to re-establish Couric's on-screen dominance it failed miserably - not only was it a total softball at Wilbanks and her husband-to-be-maybe, recycling pretty much what we already knew, but it was really, really boring (the single most jaw-dropping fact it revealed was that Jennifer Wilbanks had a whopping 8 showers before her wedding. Yowsers. Sucks to be in that bridal party). It's a shame because who knows what Wilbanks might have revealed in the hands of a skilled interviewer? The girl clearly does not look inward much, so doing so might have yielded some interesting insights that might have made her more likeable in the face of the backlash she endured.

An example of this: Katie asked her about her childhood dreams. She said that her mother had always said she'd been born to be a Mom. Jennifer herself seemed to have no clear opinion on the subject. We learn that Jennifer found the pressures of college stressful - what kid doesn't? - but that she dropped out after two years. She fell in love, had been engaged, broke it off. Really. She also got busted for shoplifting, which Katie also didn't press her on. I mean, red flags, people! She thought she'd be first of her frieds to get married; wasn't. How did she feel about that? We don't know, nobody asked her. Met John. They both liked to run! Oh, the irony. He was a born-again Christian. Katie delicately asked about the no-sex thing; they delicately answered. At the end of the day, we still don't know if they're getting married, but we do know they're keeping the gifts 'til they figure it out.

In the meantime, Jennifer evinces an affinity for the bus and for "cops and robbers movies" but reveals precious little else. Good news for Judith Regan, who can plumb the depths for her client's $500,000 book/movie project (and who we're sure won't be quite as gentle with her tender subject); bad news for Couric, whose big story ended up being a big snooze.
