TEXAS TRIBUNE HIRES MICHAEL SHERROD AS PUBLISHER
Former AOL and Examiner.com Veteran Joins the Non-Profit News Outlet in Newly Created Position
Austin, TX – January 11, 2010 – Evan Smith, Editor and CEO of the Texas Tribune (http://texastribune.org), announced today that the non-profit media organization has appointed Michael Sherrod, a former AOL executive and Examiner.com CEO, to serve as publisher throughout 2010. As a Tribune board member, Sherrod has consistently provided sound advice regarding approaching challenges, raising funds, promoting membership development and much more.
Sherrod was hired at Examiner.com in February 2008 to lead a strategic re-visioning and re-launch of the company. His efforts catapulted the Web site over 8.5 million monthly unique visitors — today over 17 million — distinguishing it as one of the top 200 websites in North America.
During his eight-year tenure at AOL, Sherrod rose to VP & GM of Community Operations & Network Integration and was one of handful executives chosen by Vice-Chairman Ted Leonsis and CEO Jon Miller to chart AOL’s three-year turn-around strategy from 2003 to 2006.
“I’m excited to join the Texas Tribune as the organization’s first publisher,” said Sherrod. “I love the mission and vision of the Tribune and respect the impact they’ve already had on the state of Texas. I’m eager to help grow it to the next level in 2010.”
Sherrod’s resume also includes tenures with Ancestry.com, DigitalCity.com, American Airlines, Fort Worth Star-Telegram, Dallas Business Courier, and his own Sherrod Publishing Company.
“Michael was courted by many media organizations, much larger than ours,” said Smith. “I’m humbled that he’s chosen to become publisher of the Texas Tribune. We’re absolutely thrilled to have him on our team.”
Sherrod earned his masters degree in Journalism/Publishing at the University of Missouri at Columbia and is set to acquire an executive MBA at years end from Texas Christian University.
