Scott Niedermeyer was born in Edmonton, and grew up in British Columbia, but the star defenseman called New Jersey home.
Niedermeyer led the Devils to three Stanley Cup titles during a 14-year career in the Meadowlands.
On Friday, December 16, the Devils will give Niedermeyer their highest honor, raising his number number 27 to the rafters.
But ahead of Scott Niedermeyer Night, MSG Plus is giving fans special programming Monday night. The cable channel is showing five of Niedermeyer’s greatest games beginning at 8 p.m.
“Scott obviously had the dramatics for scoring a big goal and setting up a goal and an assist, but what was special about him was that he could control the whole tempo of a game,” Daneyko says during the broadcast. ”Not many defensemen could do that and Scott Niedermeyer was one of the best at it.”
Drafted by the Devils in the first round in 1991, Niedermeyer left New Jersey in 2005. He won a fourth Stanley Cup in 2007 with the Anaheim Ducks.
“After winning three Stanley Cups, I don’t know how you can separate one from another,” Niedermeyer says. “Those were some very special moments, and when you get a chance to look back and understand how much hard work went into it, you realize that it really takes a team to win.”
