New Jersey Network Staffers Handed Layoff Notices

One-hundred-thirty employees at New Jersey Network received 45-day layoff notices on Tuesday. It’s the first wave to Governor Christie’s plan for doing away with the state-run, non-profit TV and radio network.

Starting on January 1, as part of Christie’s austerity program, the Public Broadcasting Authority will become an independent entity.

NJ Network, based in Trenton, owns four TV stations, including one that reaches New York City (WNJN, Montclair, Channel 50).

Reports say the Communications Workers of America, which represents the staff, has claimed that the stations will go dark if the changeover occurs.
