NYC’s ‘Lost City’ Blog Ends Its Nostalgic Run

lostcity06142010.jpgLost City, the Blogspot-domained presenter of “the vestiges of Old New York as they are steamrolled under or threatened by the currently ruthless real estate market and the City Fathers’ disregard for Gotham’s historical and cultural fabric,” has hung up the spurs.

In a lengthy farewell post, Lost City blogger Brooks of Sheffield cites the accelerating loss of New York’s unique cultural institutions as reason for ending his documentation of what he sees as the city’s deteriorating identity. He writes:

I wrote thousands of words, and posted hundreds of pictures for four-and-a-half years — nearly 3,000 posts, all told. None of them made any difference. Not really. The press paid a little attention to our windmill-tilting, but City Hall never did. The City continued on its inexorable march to glossy mediocrity.

Of Sheffield also notes that the time spent on the blog has not netted him enough money to pay the bills, and he has become exhausted in his documentation of the city’s falling landmarks. He will continue to pen Eater‘s “Who Goes There” feature, which looks at unsung New York City dining establishments.
