NEW YORK, NY — AUGUST 2, 2006 — New York Press is pleased to announce the addition of former New York City Mayor Ed Koch to the paper’s new team of regular columnists. During the ’70s and ’80s Mayor Koch became one of America’s most well-known political figures, and he has continued to remain a vibrant part of the political landscape. “I grew up watching Mayor Koch run our city and I’ll never forget his trademark ‘How am I doing?’ greeting as he strolled the streets of Manhattan,” says New York Press editor-in-chief Adario Strange. “Having such a historic icon of New York City in our paper is not only an honor, but a logical move for New York’s only remaining independent alternative weekly newspaper.”

Strange is also giddy about this move:

Another addition to New York Press’ growing ranks is Ruben Bolling, creator of the wildly popular, nationally syndicated comic strip “Tom The Dancing Bug.” Bolling makes the switch from The Village Voice to The New York Press after a month of negotiations that finally brought him to the paper. “Bolling created one of my favorite characters ever, ‘God-Man,’ so getting him to switch to New York Press was very important to me,” says Strange. “His strip has the perfect mix of humor and intelligence, and I’m incredibly excited to have him on our team.” The comic strip won the Best Cartoon Award from the Association of Alternative Newsweeklies two years in a row (2002 and 2003) and has appeared in The New York Times, The New Yorker and Mad Magazine.
