AP Budget Director's Mysterious Hotel Death
Paul Mento, 52, was found dead in a hotel bathroom with his face covered by duct tape inside the Best Western Gregory Hotel in Bay Ridge. Mento, a father of two, had worked at The Associated Press for 26 years. He started at the AP as an audit clerk in 1978 and worked his way up to budget director in 1988 before leaving the AP in 2004. Police believe Mento's death was a suicide and have found indications that he had a gambling problem. This was the second death in 90 days at the Bay Ridge hotel. Michael Thaler, RIPMichael Thaler, a longtime editor at Hackensack daily The North Jersey Record, passed away on January 4 of parathyroid cancer at the age of 45. The paper's obit writer, Jay Levin, wrote a tribute to him that's well worth reading. Why are we writing about an editor at a North Jersey newspaper passing away? Because the loss of any journalist at such a young age is a terrible thing. Check out the piece; it's worth it. Tuesday Jan 15, 2008
Reporter Killed In Afghanistan
Terrorists disguised as police officers blew up explosive belts inside the foreigner-frequented Serena Hotel, Afghanistan's only five-star hotel, at 6pm local time. The United Nations reports that the target was Norwegian Foreign Minister Jonas Gahr Store, who was not harmed in the attack. Thomassen was part of the press corps that accompanied Store to Afghanistan. News reports indicate that the explosion was loud enough to be heard two miles away from the hotel. Dagbladet's story is in Norweigan only, but rival paper Aftenposten has additional English-language information about Thomassen. Our thoughts go out to his family. Times Disses Marty Peretz In Ex-TNR Publisher ObitGilbert A. Harrison, the longtime publisher of The New Republic, has passed away at age 92. An obit at the Times opted to take the low road with a swipe at Marty Peretz: In 1974, for $380,000, Mr. Harrison sold the magazine to Martin Peretz, then a 35-year-old social studies lecturer at Harvard. Last year, Mr. Peretz sold his shares to CanWest Global Communications, a Canadian media conglomerate, but stayed on as editor in chief. In recent years, many staunch liberals have complained that the magazine has shifted somewhat to the right.
