Oh Sandy, you came and you gave without taking*
We didn’t send her away but the Sandra Day O’Connor certainly getting a send-off: cover stories from Newsweek and Time (which must be so very grateful for the distraction); lots of love from Slate (who’s tapped one of her former clerks for commentary – nice get), a thoughtful look at SDO, Conservatism and judicial temperament from the New Yorker (with a bonus audio Q&A between Jeffrey Toobin and baseball coach Matt Dellinger, in his own way a judicial centrist). We got lots of good stuff from the NYT, including the myriad manner of judicial conservativism on the bench (eek – does “faithful to the Consitution” sound like “I want another Scalia” to you?), how SDO moved women “up the bench,” and exactly what kind of tussle to expect from the ensuing confirmation process. Fireworks ain’t just for the fourth of July, baby!
Meanwhile, the blogs are on fire, natch, with a few predicting that Bush will haul out a radically conservative nomination deliberately to have it shot down, force the Dems to use up their filibuster card and then confirm a right-wing “compromise” that is only looks moderate by comparison. Clever, that. Atrios is worried about Roe v. Wade; but the LA Times recalls the argument that such a move would actually work agains the Republicans because most Americans are pro-choice. Conventional wisdom says “be careful what you wish for.” Good advice for us all right now…
*Yes, we know it’s Mandy. Gosh, you Barry Manilow fans can get so testy.
