Since We’re Pointing Fingers

tdy_anchors_media_080528.300w.jpgOn the network anchor-a-thon that took place this morning in aid of cancer, the three current voices of God opined for a moment over who was to blame for the media’s coverage of the lead-up to the Iraq war.

Charlie Gibson: “I think the questions were asked…It was just a drumbeat of support from the administration. It is not our job to debate them. It is our job to ask the questions.”

Brian Williams
: “I was in Kuwait for the buildup to the war, and, yes, we heard from the Pentagon, on my cell phone, the minute they heard us report something that they didn’t like. The tone of that time was quite extraordinary.”

Katie Couric
: “I do think we were remiss in not asking some of the right questions…I remember doing an interview and the press secretary called our executive producer and said, ‘We didn’t like the tone of that interview.’ And we said, ‘Well, tough. We had to ask some of these questions.’ And they said, ‘If you keep it up, we’re gonna block access to you during the war’…there was insidious pressure that I do think actually affected some of the coverage by the media outlets.”
