Sports Illustrated to Cut Staff

Sports Illustrated is reducing its staff by buyouts or, if not enough editorial staffers take that option, layoffs. The New York Times reports that Terry McDonell has asked for buyout volunteers by this Thursday. If enough people don’t come forward, some will be let go.

The cuts are coming because SI wants to better integrate the print and digital sides. “It used to be that we had a lot of collaboration between the website and magazine,” McDonell told the Times. “Now we’re trying to turn that collaboration into something more efficient, especially with the website and with video opportunities.”

“At this point I don’t know what the number [of staffers cut] will be but I do know that it will be substantially smaller than what we’ve done in the past,” added McDonell.
