Super Bowl Media Recap: The Ads, Prince Sucked

Too busy watching Puppy Bowl III like us? Here’s a quick recap of last night’s ho-hum Super Bowl — and the advertising and media circus surrounding it:

  • Brilliant ad commentary via SuperAdFreak:

SETH GODIN: I quit. After watching GM run a 2 million dollar commercial that consists of a robot getting fired, walking the streets and then committing suicide [above], I’m so confused, so clueless and yes, so ashamed to be even peripherally involved in this line of work, I have no choice but to quit. If your company was breaking records (in losing money) and was so adversely affecting the lives of thousands, why on earth would you run this ad? I give up.

  • NYT: “More than a dozen spots celebrated violence in an exaggerated, cartoonlike vein that was intended to be humorous, but often came across as cruel or callous.”
  • The partiesPlayboy, Maxim et al — were infinitely better than the game itself.
  • No wardrobe malfunctions, Purple Rain in the rain, we get it. But, uh, why did Prince decide to play a Foo Fighters cover?

  • Prince guitar solos phallic? Uh, are you kidding? Of course — he’s f*cking Prince.
  • Again, sorry, but the Puppy Bowl was more exciting than any of it.
