The Unlikely Disciple Has a Book Party

35372369-1.JPGRemember what it was like to be 21? No? Us neither. However we imagine Kevin Roose will clearly remember the book party thrown last night for his debut The Unlikely Disciple, which is about the semester he spent at the Reverend Jerry Falwell‘s Liberty University, a conservative Baptist school in Lynchburg, Virginia.

Roose, who is currently 21, told us he was headed back to Brown as soon as the party was over so he could write his biology(?) exam about the krebs cycle today. That’s dedication!

Roose got his start (if that phrase can be properly applied to a 21 year old published author) as an intern for A.J. Jacobs (who co-hosted the party along with Scott Poulson-Bryant) whilst Jacobs was penning The Year of Living Biblically — for those of you not in the know the book recounts Jacobs’ attempt to follow all the rules in the Bible for one year. Roose told us that apart from it being an amazing opportunity, the strangest part of his internship was when Jacobs was unable to shake his hand due the rule (we are paraphrasing here) the says men can’t touch other men who have spilled their seed on themselves. So there you have it. A few more pics (courtesy of R. Sklar) after the jump.

David Plotz’s Book Party: Have You Read The Good Book Lately?

gd book.pngHave you read the bible? This was perhaps the most frequent question bandied about at last night’s book party for David Plotz‘s Good Book held at the Tribeca home of Jacob Weisberg and Deborah Needleman.

Plotz, you may recall, blogged his way through the Old Testament of the bible for Slate, and subsequently turned the series into a book. We caught up with Plotz and asked him what book of the bible was most suited to blogging. Plotz says that while the Book of Ruth was his favorite to read, Judges was by far the best to blog…something to do with all that violence.

The party pulled a good crowd despite the terrible weather. We managed to spot A.J. Jacobs, Double X’s Jess Grose (who just saw her own book hit shelves), Big Money’s Elinor Shields, Portfolio’s Jeff Bercovici, WWD’s Irin Carmon, Michael Crowley, and Rachel Sklar (who provide the pics for this post). Rumor has it Victoria Floethe was also present. Rumor also has is that on top of the Slate napkins there were also umbrellas, though we didn’t spot any ourselves and(!) that Eliot Spitzer had made an appearance earlier in the night. More pics after the jump (though sadly none of Spitzer).

Esquire Boys Hit It Big With TV Sale

katzbook.jpgEsquire contributing editor David Katz and editor-at-large A.J. Jacobs have hit it big in Hollywood (well, a little bit) with “Things a Man Should Never Do Past 30,” the Hollywood Reporter said.

The writing pair based their project on Katz’s humor book citing 500 things that Katz thinks should not be done by over-30-somethings.

The stroke of luck hit Katz/Jacobs when director/producer Barry Sonnenfeld read the book and thought he could do something with it.

What, we’re not exactly sure.

Maybe it’ll be “Get Shorty” for the 30-plus crowd.

“The show is about a guy working at men’s magazine who is reluctant to embrace adulthood and his friend who is an immersion journalist,” said Katz, who is penning “Things” with Jacobs, an immersion journalist.

Although set at a men’s magazine, Katz assured that “Things” will not be a workplace comedy.
