Phil Jackson Holds Court at the Alex Theatre

At one point during last night’s Live Talks Los Angeles event at the Alex Theatre featuring Phil Jackson and the coach’s former locker room charge John Salley, a Lakers fan sitting directly behind FishbowlLA bellowed, “Fire Jim Buss!” Never mind that the heckle-target is A) one of the team owners and B) a likely future Jackson brother-in-law.

First and foremost, Los Angeles still loves Phil, a sentiment on full display at last night’s sold-out Glendale Q&A. The talk was part of the zen coach’s very active media tour for his new book Eleven Rings: The Soul of Success and benefited from interviewer Salley’s humorous, insider approach.

For example, Salley led off with an anecdote about being hauled into Phil’s office and learning he was being released from the Lakers. Leading him to declare a change in that summer’s plans to smoking lots of marijuana.

Former Surfwear Exec Rides LA Home Repo Wave

There’s an intriguing profile in the November issue of Los Angeles magazine of Steve Jones, a former Quiksilver surfwear exec who has gained a foothold in the high-risk realm of local residential real estate flipping. His Better Shelter sideline became so successful that he left his clothing gig for good in 2007.

Jones, who splits up the LA region with a partner, shares how his real estate endeavors began rather inauspiciously back in 2001:

One morning, when he was staying at the Standard hotel in West Hollywood for a work event, Jones went for a jog and happened upon a rundown property that was for sale. It had four garden apartments with a 1920s storybook cottage in the rear… There would be a two-year renovation before Jones filled the front units with renters and moved into the guest house.

David Byrne Reveals He ‘Probably’ Had Aspergers

In paragraph 94 of an interview in the May issue of Seed:

David Byrne: When I began making music professionally, I was an extremely shy person, Very kind of socially inhibited. I feel now, I’m just guessing, but I would say I had—
Daniel Levitin: —Aspergers?
DB: Aspergers, yes absolutely, I think probably that’s what it was.

The Talking Head says he used music as a tool to outgrow the affliction. “I thought of it really like a hammer or a pair of pliers.”
