Geraldine Baum, The LA Times’ NY Bureau Chief, Steps Down After 23 Years

Geraldine Baum, The Los Angeles Times’ New York Bureau Chief since 1989, is stepping down tomorrow. According to a memo Baum sent out to colleagues, she has decided to move on because she wants to take her life in a new direction.

“It’s as simple and complicated and mysterious as this: Although I’ll never stop writing and thinking like a journalist, it’s time for Geraldine 2.0,” wrote Baum. “I leave knowing I did the kind of work that mattered, and I’m grateful that journalists like all of you still do.”

See the complete memo after the jump.

Zell Doesn’t Want LAT “People” In Charge

Baker_Cissy.gifWord last week that Cissy Baker was named to the new position of vice president of the Washington News Bureau of the Tribune Co. got us wondering, who the hell is Cissy Baker?

We know that Cissy is the top Tribune TV person in Washington, and that she’s the daughter of Sen. Howard Baker. We also know that she has worked for CNN and Fox.

What we didn’t know — until someone clarified this for us — was that Cissy was assigned because Zell “hates former Washington bureau chief Doyle McManus” and wanted him fired and “they do not want L.A. Times people in charge” in the Washington bureau.

So that’s who Cissy Baker is.

Changes In the LAT Washington Buro

Russ Stanton sent the following memo to staffers today, explaining some changes. Not mentioned in the following note is the fact that former Washington bureau chief Doyle McManus is officially an op-ed columnist in DC. We’re still not clear what Tom McCarthy, his #2, does. Stay tuned…

Colleagues:

As you have seen, the company is making some changes to the operations of our Washington office, beginning with the naming of Cissy Baker to the new position of vice president of the Washington News Bureau of the Tribune Co.

More details will be unveiled in the coming days, but one thing that will not change is the mission of the bureau: to continue to break news and deliver unique and high quality enterprise, investigative and analytical stories to our readers — in print, online and over the airwaves.

Most of the staffing for the new operation will come from the Los Angeles Times and Chicago Tribune and we will continue to give our readers the top-notch journalism that they have come to expect from us.

[UPDATE: LAT issues press release about McManus which follows:]
