ESPN The Magazine to Debut ‘Interview’ Issue

Your FishbowlNY editors are big sports fans, but we have to be honest, most interviews with professional athletes are a bit dry. This should be expected — they’re paid to run fast in brightly colored clothes, slam other men on the ground and hit a ball with a stick, not give complex answers — but somehow we’re always disappointed in what they say.

That’s why we’re excited to read ESPN The Magazine’s first “Interview” issue, which hits newsstands Friday. We’re hoping that the interviews found inside will be more revealing than the stuff we usually hear or read.

From what we know already, there is bound to be plenty of good answers in the issue. The magazine gets Aaron Rodgers to comment on his amazing season, Derrick Rose to explain why he stayed away from league negotiations and much more. Some of the other athletes featured in the Interview issue include Justin Verlander, Ozzie Guillen, Usian BoltBernard Hopkins, Danica Patrick and Ed Reed.

ESPN The Magazine Names Chris Jones New ‘Backpage’ Columnist

ESPN The Magazine has hired Chris Jones to be its new “Backpage” columnist. Jones is a contributor to Esquire and Grantland, and a great addition to ESPN. Jones will be responsible for creating and developing all the content for ESPN’s new Backpage section, which begins in the November 16 issue.

Jones will report directly to ESPN’s Editor-in-Chief, Chad Millman. Millman said of Jones, “His stories are as eloquent and richly detailed as any being written today, about anything. Plus, he can grow a grizzly beard when he puts his mind to it. I admire that and look forward to having him join our team.”

Time Inc. Veteran Heads to ESPN

John Korpics, who has been contributing his design ideas to Time Inc. sporadically since 1995, is leaving to become Vice President, Creative Director of Print and Digital Media for ESPN The Magazine and its website. Adweek reports that this is a new position at ESPN, one which will combine print and digital design under Rob King, the magazine’s Senior Vice President.

Korpics, who was most recently Creative Director for Fortune, said of leaving Time, “It’s been a bittersweet time for me. I’ve kind of grown up at this company. If it hadn’t been this job and this opportunity, I’d still be at Fortune.

His first day will be September 6.

Pop-Up Magazine and ESPN The Magazine Treat New York Right

Last night we had the pleasure of witnessing Pop-up Magazine’s first “live issue” in New York. The collaboration with ESPN The Magazine didn’t disappoint. We didn’t quite know what to expect when the lights went down in NYU’s Skirball Center for The Performing Arts, because, well, what the hell is a “live magazine?” Turns out, it’s a lot of fun.

The evening featured a slew of presenters, and each person performed an original piece for that night only. Much like a magazine, it began with shorter performances in the beginning, with longer pieces to follow.

The best part about the night was how each piece was so personalized. There was “Data,” by Neil Janowitz. The stage was completely dark, aside from a long beam of light. Then, from out of nowhere, Janowitz ran – in tiny shorts – and jumped across the beam. The reason? He was illustrating how long the world record for the long jump was.

“How-To,” by Alyssa Roenigk, was a short about the best way for fans to streak sporting events. For that, a man ran through the crowd in just a thong. Highlight or lowlight – you decide.

ESPN The Magazine and Pop-Up Magazine Come to New York

On May 11th, ESPN The Magazine and Pop-Up Magazine – an orginization that puts on live, one night only “magazines” – will perform at NYU’s Skirball Center for the Perfoming Arts.

Here’s how it works: A mix of writers, filmmakers, photographers and artists all unveil new pieces, live on stage, in the format of a magazine. Some of the people contributing include ESPN analyst Jay BilasNew Yorker writer William Finnegan, ESPN writer Katie Baker, artist Andrew KuoFound magazine creator Davy RothbartESPN The Magazine writer Alyssa Roenigk, and New York Times Magazine writer Jon Mooallem.

Sounds pretty cool, right? Well we think so, which is why we’re going. You should too. Tickets are $25, and go on sale this Thursday at noon.

Chad Millman Promoted at ESPN The Magazine

Chad Millman has been named the new Editor-in-Chief of ESPN The Magazine, effective June 15th. Current EIC Gary Belsky will remain an Editor-at-Large through January 2012, reports Romenesko.

Millman is currently a Senior Editor, and will take over for Belsky as the magazine makes its move to Bristol, Connecticut. Judging from ESPN’s press release, Belksy doesn’t care much for the future hood:

As we prepare for our move to Bristol, Gary’s preference was to remain primarily in New York, which we understand and appreciate. We’re fortunate to have a wonderfully talented successor already on our roster with Chad Millman, whose unique editorial vision and unparalleled knowledge of the sporting landscape we’re confident will give us a new energy and continue to make the magazine a must-read for sports fans.

Yeah, we tend to agree. New York > Bristol.

ESPN The Magazine Launches First Style Issue

Hitting newsstands this week is the first of an annual endeavor from ESPN The Magazine: a fashion centric issue called the Style Report. The special issue marks a major move toward including more fashion coverage than ever before.

While this might be a risky move for a sports publication, Steven Binder, Vice President, Publishing Director for ESPN The Magazine, told FishbowlNY that he was completely confident.

When we suggested that this seemed like an attempt to lure more female readers, he countered that 20 percent of ESPN The Magazine’s subscription base is women, so that wasn’t the case. The shift, said Binder, was actually in response to reader – both male and female – feedback.

“This is something our readers want to know about. They want to see what athletes are wearing on and off the field. We’re not looking to become a fashion magazine at all, but this is the beginning of an increase in our coverage.”

ESPN The Magazine Hopes To Score With Pay Web Site

espnmag.pngBusinessweek‘s Jon Fine is reporting that ESPN The Magazine will start charging for access to its Web site. Starting in August, readers will have to pay up in order to access magazine and Web-only content like ongoing video series.

The content will be made available through ESPN’s Insider service, which costs $6.95 a month, or $39.95 a year, Fine reports. It will be available for free to magazine subscribers for a year, but espnthemag.com will be effectively shut down.

ESPN‘s bold move comes at a time when magazine publishers across the board are seeking new and different ways to earn revenue beyond ad sales. This might be a risk, but its a business model that could pay off within the sports niche. The Insider has already attracted about 350,000 paying sports fans who want to access more info than is available for free at ESPN.com, Fine says.

Interestingly, another niche publication, Saveur, said yesterday that its ad pages had increased 11 percent year to date. They have not had to change their business model yet, but they seem to be one of the only ones.
