WABC-TV’s Heidi Jones Officially Charged in Faking Story of Attack

WABC-TV/Channel 7 weather forecaster Heidi Jones was in a courtroom today being formally charged with falsely telling police that she was attacked in Central Park.

The Daily News reports she stood silently while prosecutors told Manhattan Criminal Court Judge Lynn Kotler that Jones faces two misdemeanors–punishable by up to one year in prison.

In her revised statement to police on December 13, Jones opened up about her allegedly faking the story.

“I did make this up. I made it up for attention. I have so much stress at work, with my personal life and with my family. I know there is no justification for it,” Jones said, according to the court papers.

However, in her original statement to NYPD investigators on Dec. 1, Jones documented an attack being on Sept. 24 in Central Park, with an additional attack on Nov. 21 outside of her home.

Jones’ lawyer Paul Callan, who says his client has been “vilified” in the media, entered a not guilty plea.

Sources say the false reporting is connected to problems in her personal life.

A spokesman for WABC tells FishbowlNY that Jones, who has been with WABC since 2005, remains suspended indefinitely pending an internal investigation.

WABC-TV Meteorologist Heidi Jones Denies Claim of Rape

Earlier in the week we reported that WABC-TV/Channel 7 weather forecaster Heidi Jones was accused of filing a false report with the NYPD for an attempted rape.

Now, Jones, through her lawyer, says that she never told police she was was a victim of attempted rape.

The lawyer says the characterization of the case as a ‘false rape claim’ is an attempted character assassination.

On Monday, Jones got swept up in a media firestorm when police handed Jones a ticket for false reporting. She had initially told them she was accosted by the same man on two occasions, while jogging in Central Park and again near her apartment.

Jones gave specific details of the alleged attack, claiming he was a stocky Hispanic male in his 30s wearing a black jeans jacket and blue jeans, about 5 feet 9 inches tall.

Jones was given a desk appearance ticket. The charge is a misdemeanor and she was scheduled to appear in court Jan. 15. If convicted, she could face a year in prison and fines.

WABC suspended Jones indefinitely while they conduct an internal investigation.

Police Commissioner Ray Kelly said valuable police resources and time were wasted on the investigation.

Report: WABC-TV Weather Forecaster Heidi Jones Lies About Being Raped

Update: WABC spokesman says the station has suspended Jones pending the outcome of an internal investigation.

Heidi Jones is the weekend weathercaster on WABC/Channel 7. Jones also fills in on Good Morning America. She is making her own news this morning. In a story reported first by the New York Post, Jones is accused of filing a false report regarding a rape in Central Park.

According to the Post, Jones was arrested for allegedly faking a story about being raped while jogging in Central Park. The charge is a Class A misdemeanor. If convicted, she could face up to one year in jail or a $1,000 fine.

The story says that Jones, 37, was assaulted in September. But sources tell the Post that her story doesn’t hold together for detectives.

The claim is that Jones was attacked on Sept. 24 by a Hispanic man in his 30s or 40s. The article says she was taken from behind and dragged into a wooden area. The Post says his attempts to rape Jones were thwarted by two passers-by who came to her aid.
