Author of Christian Bale Bio Returns to Manhattan Beach Stomping Grounds

From 1992 to 2002, Scottish-born, Chinese-descended and Canadian-raised movie fan Harrison Cheung rode the ups and downs of Christian Bale’s pre-Batman career. It was an odyssey that spanned the earliest days of Internet marketing and relocated him from applauding Bale from afar in Toronto to working closely with the future superstar and actor’s Adam West lookalike dad at a home in Manhattan Beach.

This Friday, Cheung will be back in Manhattan Beach for an 11 a.m. signing event at the local Barnes & Noble for his new biography Christian Bale: The Inside Story of the Darkest Batman (co-written with Nicola Pittam). For the past five years, the author has been working in Austin as an Internet marketing strategist for IBM.

After a busy appearance on the Comic-Con conference floor last Friday, Cheung tells FishbowlLA via telephone that he’s reminded of a famous observation once made by another author, Sandra Tsing Loh. “She said that if you don’t make it in Hollywood by the time you’re 40, you need to either open a yoga studio or move to Austin,” he jokes.

Remarkably, this is the first Bale biography. Released May 29, the book offers fascinating glimpses of the relationship the actor had with his late dad (who died in 2003) and that patriarch’s very shaky financial management skills. It also provides a time-capsule look at the earliest days of the Internet.

Working Towards a PhD in Hollywood Rom-Coms

As New York-based media studies student and feministing.com editor Chloe Angyal (pictured) readily admits, pouring over Hollywood romantic comedies for a doctoral dissertation “sure beats poking at a petri dish.” The 2009 Princeton grad is currently working towards this very unusual PhD through the Journalism and Media Research Centre at the University of New South Wales in Sydney, Australia, where she is originally from.

The trends Angyal is focused on include the well-noted move in recent years to expose more of the studio film genre’s male stars. Think Jason Segel, Jake Gyllenhaal, Justin Long, Ashton Kutcher, Ryan Reynolds, Justin Timberlake and several others. But what does this all mean?

They’re all white. They’re all lean and broad-shouldered. They’re all rather muscular. Some of them are toned and sculpted in accordance with superhero standards: Chris Evans was fresh off filming Captain America when he made What’s Your Number? and Reynolds made The Proposal right after he wrapped Wolverine. And, uh, it shows…

Film Threat Unveils 50 Most Frigid In Hollywood

heath.jpgFilm Threat, the snarky, biting answer to the film industry’s constant inhouse sniping, opens its 50 Most Frigid in Hollywood with Heath Ledger and the politically incorrect, bad taste query: “Why so deceased?”

Heath Ledger was an actor on the climb, albeit a rather subtle one, to the upper ranks of his profession. While “10 Things I Hate About You” and “A Knight’s Tale” weren’t necessarily Oscar-contenders, at least one of them was based on Shakespeare. And while playing second fiddle to Mel Gibson in “The Patriot” wasn’t a star-making turn, playing the skin flute with Jake Gyllenhaal in “Brokeback Mountain” and playing pseudo-Bob Dylan in “I’m Not There” were worthy of increased respect and recognition. Everything was pointing up and Ledger’s role as the Joker was the prize fruit he’d been climbing towards.

The pesky mag goes on to bemoan:

Carmen Electra: Mindless tits and ass have their place in society, but her body has been duping people into paying for shit cinema for far too long, and it’s not even as if folks are paying to see her naked! We’re not saying the only good Carmen Electra is a naked Carmen Electra (okay, maybe we are), but how bad is it when Pamela Anderson is making more informed, and memorable, career decisions?

Pacino and De Niro: “Everybody said how great it was that De Niro was getting together with Pacino again after teaming up in ‘Heat,’ conveniently forgetting that one of the things that made ‘Heat’ so effective was the fact they were only in one scene together…”

Katherine Heigl: “It’s so simple it’s cliche, but if she doesn’t have anything nice to say, and she wants to keep working, she might want to shut up…”

You said it, Film Threat…

Lunch: Valerie Bertinelli Weighs In

homepage_graphic04_large.jpg

— DIANE CLEHANE

As much as we love our bird’s eye perch from the bar, it’s always a treat when we’re invited to dine in the grown up section — especially when the scene is as head-spinning as it was today. Hallmark Channel’s senior vice president Jen Geisser and her power publicist Jaime Saberito made room for me at the table at a luncheon hosted by their fearless leader the consummate showman Henry Schleiff and attended by a tasty stew of bold-faced names and top executives from UNICEF that made for one interesting afternoon of Cobb salads and conversation. Henry, newly ensconced on UNICEF’s board, brought the group to together to kick off the TAP project during ‘World Water Week’ (March 16-22). The initiative was created to raise funds and awareness by asking NYC diners at select eateries around town to forego their Fiji water for good old NYC tap water and donate what they would have spent on it to help fund clean water for kids around the world. And, yes, Michael’s is participating.

The reigning queen of the celebrity diet wars Valerie Bertinelli (A 40-pound weight loss thanks to Jenny Craig!) was the guest of honor (arriving with her boyfriend Tom Vitale) having made one movie for the network with another one in the works — Mrs. Washington Goes to Smith (Catchy title!). The still adorable actress and newly minted best-selling author was busy signing books for everyone (Henry thinks of everything!) but still made time to chat with me. Her big news — her book, Losing It — And Gaining My Life Back One Pound at Time will debut at No. 1 on this week’s New York Times‘ list. “I’m so thrilled — it’s on my son’s 17th birthday and I dedicated the book to him,” she says. “I couldn’t be more blessed.” Val (we’re on a first name basis now) also confided that she’s hot on starting another book and already has an idea that’s bound to strike a chord. “I’d like to write something like Divorce & Children: Love Your Child More Than You Hate Your Ex. The list is long when one considers who might benefit from such a tome. For now, at least, it appears Silda Spitzer won’t be needing it but we’re not closing the book on that one just yet.

Here’s the rundown on today’s crowd:

1. The white wine was flowing in celebration of Linda Fairstein‘s latest book, Killer Heat with a table full of gals that know a little something about the subject. In attendance: Cosmo editrix Kate White, super agent Esther Newberg, former Law & Order SVU star Stephanie March, Lesley Stahl (I promise to keep my eye out for that 60 Minutes watch!) and Cynthia Lufkin (Congrats on being named The American Cancer Society’s Mother of the Year!)

2. Bobby Zarem and a Jake Gyllenhaal doppelganger.

3. Mayor Joe Armstrong who has been traveling far and wide hard at work on his upcoming book with some lovely looking ladies. Welcome back Joe, we missed you!

Bonnie Fuller Likes the Laddies

FullerTrump.jpg

Bonnie Fuller’s back. We’ll keep this short, but in a piece about men, wonderful men!, she proves to be out of touch with the real world. Proof:

She thinks unlikely-to-work-ever-again actress Rosanna Arquette is a career woman. Paul McCartney is praised for dating her as she’s 48. He’s the 65 year-old most eligible bachelor on earth.

Brad Pitt has been with drab, dull, no-talent Angelina Jolie for three whole years and Fuller finds this astounding.

“Certifiable hunk” Jake Gyllenhaal is dating Reese Witherspoon. He’s 26, she’s 31. She’s got an Oscar; he’s got rumors.

Kevin Federline, like Thackeray’s Becky Sharp, proves he can be good for so much a year.

If Fuller had any wit, she’d infuse these posts with some tongue in cheekiness, but she’s earnest–say what you want, this girl is earnest. If she had any wit, she’d be unemployed. Or rather, she’d have our job and we’d be unemployed.

(Question: Why is she cuddling up to the Donald?)

DreamWorks, Paramount Update
DreamWorks is working through tension with parent company Paramount Pictures with the latter reporting boxoffice receipts for DreamWorks under the newly-created DreamWorks-Paramount banner, Variety is reporting. The move, Var says, “could help pave the way for a scenario in which DreamWorks becomes more of an autonomous production company.” Read the rest of the story here.

‘Brothers’ Love Triangle Set
Natalie Portman will join Tobey Maguire and Jake Gyllenhaal in Brothers for director Jim Sheridan, Variety reports. It’s a love triangle based on the 2004 Danish pic by Susanne Bier starring Connie Nielsen.

Diesel, Walker Back in Drivers’ Seats
Universal is back on track with its Fast and the Furious installment with a reteaming of the first pic’s original stars Vin Diesel and Paul Walker back on board to star in a fourth film. You may remember that the pic helped boost their respective careers and in turn ditched they franchise. They’re back now but obviously THR has already forgotten who Diesel is: on the trade paper’s site, a pic of Chris Daughtry is identified as Diesel. Guess it was the bald head that got the editors confused.

seacrest.jpegFox, Seacrest Pairing Plunges Emmy Ratings
It’s safe to say that Monday was a pretty bad day for Fox and Ryan Seacrest. Their tag-team on Sunday’s Emmy telecast was the second lowest rated show in the awards’ history, garnering just 13.1 million viewers, reports Variety. The tally was well below the 16.2 million that NBC snagged for the same show last year. And to make matters worse for Fox, the smallest Emmy aud is still the 1990 telecast which drew 12.3 million and also aired on Fox. Maybe they should stick to American Idol? Just a thought…

Casting News
Variety gives the skinny on a couple casting stories. First Tobey Maguire and Jake Gyllenhaal are in negotiations to star in Jim Sheridan’s Brothers for Relativity Media, a remake of Susanne Bier’s Danish-language drama. Meanwhile, Oscar winner Jim Broadbent has signed on to join the next Harry Potter pic, Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince. Broadbent will play a retired potion’s master.

HBO greenlights Gardens
Grey Gardens goes on and on! The documentary, which has already been translated to a Broadway show, will now get a big-screen redo thanks to HBO Films which has just greenlit the pic, THR reports. Drew Barrymore and Jessica Lange will star and Michael Sucsy will direct.

Saldana On Board for Star Trek
J.J. Abrams continues to lock in crew members for his Star Trek installment with THR reporting that Zoe Saldana has joined the cast to play the chief communications officer on the USS Enterprise for Paramount Pictures.

FBLA 20 Questions with Joy A

1175612227_l.jpgPop On The Pop is much, much more fun than any of those big-boy celeb gossip sites, and here’s one reason why: Joy A (pictured here showing off her lovely eyelids). We ask Joy A our patented 20 Questions to find out what makes her “pop.” The answer? Jake Gyllenhaal, being mistaken for Brandy and a unicorn named Magical. Natch.

1. What newspapers do you read?
I don’t actually read any newspapers right now, because I’m real busy. But I do glance! Haha. I take a good glance at The LA Times, sometimes USA Today. I also visit news sites.

2. Which ones do you move your lips to while reading?
I think I read too fast for moving my lips simultaneously.

3. Which Web sites are on your favorites bookmark?
As far as celeb gossip goes, I’m a sucker for People’s website and TMZ. But some of my fave bloggers are Evil Beet and Seriously? OMG! WTF?.

Jake and Maggie Gyllenhaal Escape Fiery Death in Marin, Not Hell

20061227__mankasfire_Viewer.jpg

Jake Gyllenhaal and sister Maggie were among the guests forced to stand around in their jammies when their Marin hotel, Manka’s Inverness Lodge, burned down early Wednesday morning. From the Marin Independent Journal:

None of the actors were available for comment. But Daniel DeLong, a co-chef/owner with his partner, Margaret Grad}, said they were helpful and concerned about the historic lodge. “Jake was helping me pull things out of the fire,” DeLong said.

FBLA loves brave movie stars, even though the gentle Jake was the last person we’d think of for an action role.
