Think Like a Luxe-Life Scout for South Florida’s Ocean Drive

Ocean-Drive-articleIf Ocean Drive editor-in-chief Jared Shapiro isn’t sure of the age demographic of his magazine’s luxury-loving set, it’s because, as he puts it, “in Miami, you can be 23 or you can be 80 and [still] go to the clubs.” What he does know is that all but a piddling 1 percent of the mag’s readership have “liquid assets of $750,000 and up.”

What content interests those readers? Stories on places to burn through their money, for one:

The culture section is always in need of content. “Hottest Ticket” covers a big concert or play and generally runs 500 to 600 words. Pitch this if you know Fleetwood Mac or Justin Timberlake is coming to town; particularly if you can score an interview. The “Taste” section covers new restaurants, chefs, trends and more — most pieces average 450 words. “We’re starting to do a lot more sidebars, as so many restaurants and bars and stores and buildings are going up. So sometimes [the story] can be 1,000 words, plus a 500-word sidebar,” said Shapiro.

Jared Shapiro Named EIC of Ocean Drive

Niche Media has named Jared Shapiro editor-in-chief of Ocean Drive. Shapiro most recently served as editorial director, news and entertainment, for In Touch and Life & Style. He had been with Bauer Publishing, parent of the latter two titles, since 2005.

“Jared is a well-recognized entertainment journalist with deep relationships with the Hollywood community, and a first class reputation for combining integrity with news,” said Mandi Norwood, editorial director of Niche Media, in a statement. “His broad range of experience and creative energy will continue to solidify Ocean Drive’s position as the premiere lifestyle publication for the sophisticated and socially active audience.”

Shapiro’s appointment is effective next month.

Bauer Publishing Makes Changes

Bauer Publishing has named Jared Shapiro editorial director of news and entertainment for In Touch and Life & Style, a new role at the company. Shapiro has been with Bauer since 2005, most recently as executive editor of Life & Style. As editorial director, he will report to Dan Wakeford, editor-in-chief of the two magazines.

Bauer has also named Terri White executive editor of Life & Style. White was most recently editor-in-chief of Buzz, an entertainment  magazine published alongside Britain’s The Sun.

“The appointment of such strong talent to our executive editorial team reinforces the extraordinary quality that Bauer is known to deliver at the newsstand,” said Sebastian Raatz, executive vice president of Bauer Publishing. “The talent that we’ve positioned to lead these staffs will take Bauer’s entertainment group to the next level.”

Each move is effective immediately.
