21.6 Million Watch USA-Belgium Match on ESPN, Univision (TVNewser)
Between ESPN and Univision, 21.6 million viewers watched Tuesday’s USA-Belgium World Cup match — 16.5 million on ESPN and another 5.1 million on Univision. New York Post The broadcast’s workday time slot meant ESPN’s coverage of USA-Belgium was only the second most watched World Cup game so far. ESPN said the viewership of Tuesday’s nailbiter failed to top the USA-Portugal game, which drew 18.22 million viewers. That game aired on a Sunday evening. Deadline Hollywood While not the record-breaking 10.4 million who tuned in for Mexico’s loss on June 29 to the Netherlands nor the 6.5 million who saw Portugal tie Team USA, Tuesday’s Univision viewership was better than the 3.4 million who watched America’s 1-0 loss to Germany on June 26. Online, Univision Digital saw a record-breaking 1.8 million unique viewers watch Tuesday’s game. AllFacebook The Facebook Data Science Team reported that the match yielded 21 million interactions (posts, comments and likes) from 13 million users globally, including more than 6.5 million interactions from some 4.1 million U.S. users. Variety For the World Cup through the Round of 16, ESPN and ABC averaged 4.08 million viewers — a record audience for the tournament, up 44 percent from 2010 (2.84 million) and 122 percent from 2006 (1.84 million).

Katie Couric’s Talk Show Ending (TVNewser)
Katie Couric‘s syndicated daytime talk show Katie will end after two seasons, Couric and ABC announced Thursday. “While production will continue on Katie through June 2014, we’ve mutually agreed that there will not be a third season of the show,” Couric and Disney-ABC said in a statement. HuffPost The news follows Couric’s decision to leave ABC News early due to her new partnership with Yahoo!, where she will serve as the website’s “global anchor.” New York Daily News The end of Katie came as no surprise. There has been buzz for months that trouble has been brewing behind the scenes, which started when Couric’s close pal and executive producer Jeff Zucker left Katie to run CNN. Show insiders have also depicted a tug-of-war between Couric and producers: She had hoped to turn the show into a more news-driven production, while they have pushed to make the talk show more lighter and more gossip-focused. Ad Age / Media News It recently still ranked among the top 10 daytime syndicated shows, pulling about 2.2 million viewers on average, but ratings fell short of expectations, especially given the high cost of production and Couric’s celebrity. THR The end of Katie opens up time slots at 3 and 4 p.m. on ABC-owned stations and others in key markets. These are already being coveted by other shows; the stations also may opt to expand news into those time slots. Some stations had already chosen other shows for next fall, which is believed to have contributed to the decision to the show. Capital New York With her daytime show ending, Couric will presumably have some flexibility to pursue other TV options. One of the long-rumored options is CNN, which is being led by Zucker. In an interview with Capital earlier this month, Zucker shot down the reports that he had tried to woo Couric to the cable news channel. “We did not have any conversations with Katie about coming to CNN,” Zucker said.

Lunch At Michael’s: Lance Armstrong — For Governor?

lunch_at_michaels_logo3.jpg

— DIANE CLEHANE

Remember a few weeks back when I promised Lunch readers a full report on the off chance we had our own encounter Lance Armstrong at 55th & Fifth? Well, here’s your early holiday treat. The Tour de France winner-turned-man about town was holding court at Table One today so I couldn’t resist chatting up the surprisingly shy guy. When I first spotted Lance in the power spot I was struck by how dashing (and slim) he looked in his power suit (accessorized, of course, with his own LiveStrong bracelet). All you gossipmongers out there will probably be disappointed to learn he wasn’t dining with his ex-Tory Burch or his one time canoodling partner Ashley Olsen. When I introduced myself to Lance as he got up to leave, he looked a bit nervous when he spotted me surreptitiously (or so I thought) taking notes. “What are you writing?” he asked nervously. That’s when I knew it wasn’t exactly the right time to ask about Tory or Ashley, so I told him I write this little column about who lunches at Michael’s on Wednesdays and asked him if he could tell me who he was with today. After giving the question a bit more time than one would think it warranted, he warmed up and answered. Turns out my new pal was dining with the head of his foundation, Doug Ulman and Kathy Giusti, founder of the Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation. “She does an incredible job raising money for the prevention of that cancer,” he said. When asked why he chose to come to Michael’s (it’s his second visit in so many months), he said with a big smile, “Whenever I ask people where they want to have lunch they say, ‘Let’s go to Michael’s!” He told me he had another date planned but since he seemed a bit skittish about generating any press I promised him I’d keep mum on the specifics. In the meantime, ‘Mayor’ Joe Armstrong says fellow Texans are so impressed by Lance’s heroic fundraising efforts that there’s a movement afoot to draft him into running for governor of the Longhorn state. If Arnold can do it, why not?

Here’s the rundown on today’s crowd:

1. Lance Armstrong, Doug Ulman and Kathy Giusti.

2. Peter Brown.

3. ‘Mayor’ Joe Armstrong and Dorothy Kalins enjoying a long awaited “reunion lunch.” These good pals go way back to the days when Joe was founding publisher of Saveur and Dorothy was editor …

4. Would love loved to have been a fly on the wall for this one: Jim Dolan and Viacom’s Philippe Dauman.

5. Herb Siegal — congrats on your engagement! Ain’t love grand …

6. A group of gents we didn’t recognize …

Gossip Jamboree: American Idols, Idle Americans

captain america title copy.jpg

Captain America is dead! We didn’t even know he’d been sick.

Madonna can’t manage to restrain her kids–first David’s not in a car seat, then Rocco’s not belted up. Wait til they learn to drive.

Antonella Barba’s thigh-high boots ain’t going to save her sorry ass.

Kevin Federline visited Britney in re-hab, probably asking for an advance on his allowance.

Tom Cruise and Katie, his baby-making-machine, were shopping for more baby crap.

Lindsay Lohan went blonde. We wish she’d get a Brazilian and then have the drapes match the carpet.
