Rush & Molloy & Many Delightful Memories

ScandalCoverThere’s a new book out today from George Rush and Joanna Molloy. Scandal: A Manual is written mostly from Rush’s point of view and offers 256 pages of breezy anecdotes from the pair’s separate and combined days in the trenches of NYC celebrity gossip.

One of the main takeaways is how much more fun this beat was before the Internet took a firm 24/7 hold. It was never quite a noble profession, but pre-Gawker, TMZ and the rest, the pair only had to compete with the New York Post, most of the time in playful ways:

We tried not to yank people out of the closet. But we did sometimes give clues. We once ran a photo of ‘N Sync’s Lance Bass with Jamie Lynn-Sigler and Shannon Elizabeth as they picked out free stuff at a hospitality suite. Bass’ then-secret partner, Reichen Lehmkuhl, was with them.

Laura Ling Revisits Her Conversation with Bill Clinton About Bullying

One of the more memorable media moments of 2012 was when Laura Ling sat down with former President Bill Clinton to discuss his experiences with high school bullying. It was for a special August 13 celebrity-tinged episode of Ling’s series E! Investigates, for which she also chatted with Lance Bass, Mike Tyson and Jillian Michaels.

There was Ling, three summers after being retrieved from North Korea by the 42nd Commander-in-Chief, discussing how he was ridiculed for being overweight and not wearing cool clothes to the dance. How did it all come about, we wondered?

“I had read about President Clinton being picked on as a young man, even “slugged” by a bully, and I knew that he would be able to offer some invaluable insight and perspective,” Ling tells FishbowlLA. “To think that this poor, self-described “band geek,” who was bullied growing up, could emerge to be one of the most powerful figures in the word – now that’s an inspiring story for young people.”

‘Opposite Marriage’ Video is So Easy to Spoof

<a href="http://www.funnyordie.com/videos/6eddb255b2" title="from FOD Team, Jane Lynch, Alicia Silverstone, Lance Bass, George Takei, Liz Feldman, Jason Lewis, Sarah Chalke, and Sophia Bush “>A Gaythering Storm from Jane Lynch

The National Organization for Marriage (NOM) released an ad about storms and being afraid of the gays. You can watch it here. The kind of stuff that may have resonated back before Melissa Etheridge came out – before Ellen Degeneres was a day-time icon, before gay marriage was legal in four states. Anyway, the point is – you don’t want to compete with the gays for wit – they win every time, people. There are about a zillion spoofs of the NOM video and this seems to be the best one we’ve seen…today.

Meatpacking Protesters Annoy Christina Aguilera, Nylon Party

Partygoers lining up outside Hotel Gansevoort for Nylon‘s 8th anniversary rooftop bash Wednesday night were treated to thongs, er, throngs of sign-wielding and bucket-banging Meatpacking District residents none-too-thrilled with the hotel’s plan to put up a billboard in their ‘hood.

Once inside, though, it took revelers roughly two SoCo-with-limes and an hourlong “gifting suite” — open to all attendees — to forget about the silly little protest on the street some 14 floors below. (“What’s the big deal about a billboard? Look at these jeans!”)

Christina Aguilera, the evening’s host, eventually showed, as did Jamie-Lynn Sigler and Lance Bass, who sang-along to Bass’ former boy-band boy Justin Timberlake‘s “Sexy Back.”

Other FBNY notables: Alan Cumming, Run-D.M.C.’s Darryl “D.M.C.” McDaniels, Eve, Page Sixer Corynne Steindler with her sister, and Daily News Gatecrasher Ben Widdicome sporting an impressive Boris Becker beard.
