Fox News Gets the Zellweger Skinny

Once upon a time, Tom Cruise told Renée Zellweger: “You complete me.” But today, it’s all about Renee’s complete “new” me.

In the wake of Zellweger’s shockingly unfamiliar red carpet face, presented Monday at Elle magazine’s “Women in Hollywood” awards event in Los Angeles, Fox News did a little investigating. Our main takeaway? We’re a long way from Hollywood’s Golden Age:

“It looks like she had eyelid surgery, blepharoplasty, Botox, lip fillers and cheek fillers,” founder and partner of Fountain Medical Group Dr. Todd Schlifstein, who doesn’t treat Zellweger, told FOX 411. “It appears she changed the shape of eye and eyelid. She removed excess skin, tightened skin around the area.”

Vernon Jordan, Paul Shaffer and Richard Belzer Grab a Bite at Michael’s

— DIANE CLEHANE

We missed Harvey Keitel (who, we hear, is a pretty nice guy) by a day, but the usual suspects kept things hopping in the dining room at Michael’s today. By now, we’ve grown used to seeing Richard Belzer with his dog Bebe (pronounced Bay-Bay en Francais, in case you were wondering) in tow for his 1 pm lunches every now and again. But we did perk up when Vernon Jordan came in. Talk about presence!

I had a chance to catch up with one of my favorite regulars, ‘Mayor’ Joe Armstong who, when I first started writing this column, made it his personal mission to introduce me to as many movers and shakers as possible. The native Texan with the heart of gold just can’t help himself when it comes to do-good deeds. This afternoon he was full of fire telling me about the upcoming benefit for The Hole in The Wall Gang Camp on October 21 at Lincoln Center. Joe spent seven years as a camp counselor during the summer at the original Connecticut camp — He now proudly bears the title of ‘Mr. Ambassador’ for the organization — and can’t say enough about the kids whose lives are forever changed thanks to Paul Newman. “They make you realize what is really important, ” says Joe.

So, if you want to help continue Newman’s good works and spend an evening rubbing shoulders with Alec Baldwin, Meryl Streep, Joanne Woodward and Renee Zellweger, get out those checkbooks and buy a ticket to the gala. Tell them Joe sent you …

Here’s the rundown on today’s crowd:

1. Self‘s Lucy Danziger and some leggy leather clad gals from L’Oreal talking ‘stress management’

2. Law & Order SVU’s Richard Belzer and David Letterman‘s band leader Paul Shaffer

3. ‘Mayor’ Joe Armstrong and O’s book editor Sara Nelson.

4. Leonard Lauder and a casually elegant gal who, upon greeting the cosmetic king exclaimed, “This is the high point of my week!”

Seth Rogen As You’ve Never Seen Him Before–in Vanity Fair

cuar01_behindthescenes0803.jpg

Vanity Fair presents the annual Hollywood issue in March. Classic scenes from Hitchcock films are recreated with stunt doubles contemporary actors.

Cary Grant, in North by Northwest, is portrayed by Seth Rogen. Features editor Jane Sarkin doesn’t seem to have a bright future in casting. The style editor figured that the gray suit was the most important part of the shot, so she had a London tailor make an exact copy. You don’t know whether to laugh or cry.

Sundance Iconoclasts: About as Daring as Mayo on Pastrami

Sundance Channel and Grey Goose Vodka are foisting a new season of Iconoclasts on the world. We love these pairings, largely because they’re so easy to mock.

Robert Lloyd loves this because it’s pretentious worthy high-production value television, unlike everything else he’s forced to review.

Maureen Ryan likes the longer format of celebrity chit-chat.

Tonight, professional edgy guy Sean Penn chats with author Jon Krakauer about Penn’s movie based on Krakauer’s book. Synergy.

Alicia Keys and Ruby Dee are fine, if only because their names rhyme.

Mike Myers, who’s working on a movie about a self-help expert and Surprise! self-help expert Deepak Chopra.

Norman Lear and Howard Schultz–moguls.

Wynton Marsalis meets Iron Chef John Besh — wanna bet they talk about what it means to miss New Orleans?

And since this series is all about “the world’s most fascinating and controversial minds”, who better than:

Madeleine Albright and Ashley Judd. What’s the connection? They both color their hair? They both photograph taller than than they really are? We can only hope this will be as embarrassing as the Renee Zellweger and Christiane Amanpour session last season.

The SNL version with Bjork and Charles Barkley is priceless, but NBC, the spoilsports, have pulled their content from YouTube.

Atonement Wows Venice Fest
keira.jpegA-list celebs and their filmmaker friends are causing a commotion in the canals right now at the Venice Film Festival, which kicked off its 75th anniversary yesterday with the premiere of Joe Wright’s war romancer Atonement. Variety gives complete coverage, calling the fest’s opening “an invigorating shot of youth.” The news story, by Nick Vivarelli and Ali Jaafar, says the pic received a positive reception, a rare occurrence in Venice. Reviewer Derek Elley agreed with the report in his own critical account of “Atonement,” writing “rarely has a book sprung to vividly to life” in a “smart, dazzling” film. He continues that its stars – Keira Knightley and James McAvoy – show “impressive star poise and physical elan.” Speaking of physical, the tabs are likely to have a field day with Knightley’s presence on the red carpet with early chatter criticizing on her gaunt appearance. Those starlets never seem to catch a break do they?

Easton Ellis Novel Headed to Big-Screen
Another Bret Easton Ellis novel is being prepped for the big-screen with the packaging of his The Informers almost fully formed thanks to the addition of cast-members Billy Bob Thornton, Kim Basinger and Brandon Routh, THR reports. Ashley Olsen, Jon Foster, Austin Nichols and Lou Taylor Pucci are also in the mix for the adaptation to be directed by Gregor Jordan. The story centers on seven stories taking course during a week in the life of a movie exec, his wife, his mistress, a rock star, a vampire and a kidnapper. Oh my!

Innovative Agents Show Fortitude
That interesting lawsuit sitch at Innovative Artists – two agents sued the firm’s partner to get out of allegedly unfair employment contracts – continues to play itself out with Michael McConnell and Ben Press announcing in THR today that they’ve launched their own fully-financed agent. The duo has formed a new shingle, fortitude, bringing a client list that includes Chevy Chase, Gina Gershon, Lara Flynn Boyle and Cybill Shepherd, among others. Rosters aside, Innovative honcho Scott Harris says in the story that his former employees’ claims are “disappointing.”

Zellweger Headed to Miami
renee.jpegIn casting news, Variety reports that Renee Zellweger will team up with Harry Connick Jr. in the fish-out-water comedy Chilled in Miami for Gold Circle Films. Pic will find the Oscar-winning actress starring as a Miami businesswoman who is transferred to Minnesota. Jonas Elmer is directing and funny enough, his last film was a Danish pic called Nynne which was often referred to as the Danish Bridget Jones.
