Rodale Promotes Paul Collins

rodale logo GPaul Collins has been promoted to associate publisher of Rodale’s Runner’s World and Running Times. Collins has been serving as ad director for both brands since 2010.

Collins has been with Rodale since 2006. He previously served as Bicycling’s ad director and director of Rodale’s Sports Marketing & Events Group.

“Paul has everything we’re looking for in an associate publisher,” said Molly O’Keefe, Runner’s World and Running Times’ publisher, in a statement. “He has a dedication and passion for our brands. He has the ability to connect with partners and understand their expectations, and also the creativity and leadership to pull together programs that meet and exceed everyone’s goals. I’m excited to be able to promote Paul to this new position where we will continue to work together for these two dynamic brands.”

All sections of the magazine are open for pitches, but there are certain topics that freelancers should be careful to avoid. Basic running how-tos won’t cut it for this advanced crowd, so save your “10 Stretching Tips” for another outlet. Instead, said editor-in-chief Jonathan Beverly, writers need to cite new research and relay the importance of why readers need to rethink their stretching routine. “You have to answer the ‘why’ and not just the ‘how,’” he said.

Rodale Integrates Sports Brands, Promotes Two

bicycling.jpgJust over a month after restructuring and promoting its editorial leadership and chief executives, magazine publisher Rodale Inc. said today that it has integrated its running and cycling sales teams under one associate publisher.

Molly O’Keefe, the associate publisher for Runner’s World and Running Times magazines, has been promoted to the associate publisher of the newly integrated sports title team, taking on responsibilities of Bicycling and Mountain Bike as well.

Paul Collins, director of Rodale’s Sports Marketing & Events division, has also been named advertising director of the four sports titles, and he will be reporting to O’Keefe.

The company said the integration “will provide agencies and brand marketers access to two robust audiences, with strong household incomes — and a passion for the healthy and active lifestyle — at a time when running and cycling participation are at an all time high.”

Last month, Rodale implemented a number of changes across many of its titles and divisions, including giving additional responsibilities to David Willey, editor-in-chief of Runner’s World and editorial director of Running Times, who now also serves as editorial director of Bicycling.

Rodale Restructures Management, Promotes Michaelson To President, CMO

rodale.jpgMen’s Health publisher Rodale Inc. announced a sweeping restructuring of its management team yesterday, along with the promotion of customer marketing EVP Gregg Michaelson to president of integrated marketing and sales and chief marketing officer.

The changes come five months after Rodale’s CEO Steven Pleshette Murphy decided to leave the company and was replaced by the founder’s granddaughter, Maria Rodale.

In addition to Michaelson, several other executives were given additional duties and shuffled around, including editorial execs David Willey, editor-in-chief of Runner’s World and editorial director of Running Times, who will now also serve as editorial director of Bicycling; Bill Stump, who was promoted to SVP/editorial director to oversee Prevention, Organic Gardening and Rodale.com; and Karen Rinaldi, who was promoted to EVP/general manager and publishing director of Rodale Books.

Left out of the promotions was Men’s Health editor David Zinczenko, as pointed out by Jeff Bercovici. The recent cover controversy may have something to do with that.

Other changes saw chief information officer Ken Citron adding COO to his title, Tom Pogash being promoted to CFO, Robin Shallow taking over control of Rodale’s communications department and Paul McGinley becoming EVP/general counsel and chief administrative officer.

New York City’s Media Marathon

marathon.jpgThis weekend wasn’t just Halloween in Manhattan, it was also the setting for the 40th Annual New York City Marathon, one of the most difficult (and longest running) endurance races in the world, and certainly one of the largest. It attracts professional athletes, celebrities, and your every day runners from around the world, who often train for months in preparation for the event.

And despite the wintry economic climate of the news world that makes the rest of us want to hide under the covers until we all have jobs again, this year’s marathon also included some members of the media who certainly know something about endurance.
